Chapter 12: Epilogue – Never Fully Resolved

Two days. Two days I spent turning the old cabin into a makeshift fortress. I boarded windows, reinforced doors, and rigged tripwires with bells that would betray any approach. Clara was confused, even scared, by my frantic activity, but she didn’t argue. Evelyn had painted a stark picture for her too.

“Jack, these are not process servers,” Evelyn had explained gently to Clara. “They are armed men. They will not hesitate to use force.”

The air grew heavy with anticipation. The forecast called for a cold front, snow blanketing the Montana mountains. Midnight on the second day arrived, a black canvas outside the cabin windows. The only sounds were the whisper of the wind and the crackle of the wood stove.

Then, a faint jingle.

A tripwire.

“They’re here,” I whispered to Evelyn, who was stationed by a small, reinforced window.

Clara, huddled in the corner, whimpered softly.

Heavy footsteps crunched in the snow outside. I heard low, guttural voices, distorted by the wind. They were moving tactically, like a trained unit. Damon wasn’t sending thugs; he was sending professionals. Black Wolf shadows twisting their code.

A powerful thud vibrated through the front door. Not a knock. A battering ram.

“Go, Clara!” I shouted, pushing her towards the back door. “Evelyn, with her. Follow the escape route we planned!”

“No, Jack!” Clara cried, her face streaked with tears.

“Go! Now!” I roared, pushing her again. “This is not negotiable!”

Another shuddering blow to the door. Wood groaned.

Evelyn grabbed Clara’s arm. “Come on, Clara! Jack knows what he’s doing!” She pulled Clara towards the back, disappearing into the dark corridor.

A deep, metallic clang echoed. The front door splintered inward, torn from its hinges. Figures in dark tactical gear, night vision goggles gleaming, poured into the cabin. Their assault rifles swept the room, flashlights cutting through the darkness.

“Lawson!” a voice boomed, amplified through a comms unit. It was Julian. “Surrender now! We have a warrant!”

A warrant. They were still trying to mask this as a legal operation, even as they breached the cabin with military force.

I dropped behind the heavy oak dining table, reloading my pistol. The room exploded into chaos. Gunfire tore through the thin walls. Splinters flew. The smell of gunpowder filled the air.

Julian’s voice, now closer, screamed: “Find him! Don’t let him get away!”

I saw muzzle flashes, heard the heavy thud of boots. They weren’t just searching. They were assaulting. The legal dispute was now a full-blown war zone, right here in my family’s cabin, with my sister’s life hanging in the balance.

There was no turning back. No law, no court, no judge would intervene now. Only bullets.
