👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option A – Feign total corporate obedience and seek a managerial promotion to gain executive elevator access keys.
The next few weeks were a carefully orchestrated performance. My “innie” self became the epitome of the devoted LuminaTech employee. I arrived thirty minutes early, stayed an hour late. I volunteered for additional data analysis, offering to optimize protocols.
Julian noticed. He always did.
“Evan, your dedication to Project Lethe is truly exemplary,” he commented one morning, leaning against my desk. A genuine smile, this time. “Your output has increased by nearly 18%.”
I kept my expression neutral, my internal self recoiling from the forced pleasantries. “Just trying to contribute, Julian. This project is… fascinating.”
“It is, isn’t it?” He clapped me on the shoulder. “The future of neural data management.”
Two weeks later, Julian called me into his office. The antique fountain pen was still on his desk. The surveillance camera light still glowed.
“Evan, the Senior Archivist position is opening up,” he announced, gesturing to the seat opposite him. “It comes with a substantial pay bump, full executive privileges, and access to all secure research levels, including Sub-level 3.”
My heart hammered against my ribs. Sub-level 3. The key.
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving,” Julian said, his eyes scanning my face. “Your loyalty, your discretion… it’s exactly what we need in a leadership role.”
I kept my breathing steady. “I’d be honored, Julian. Thank you for this opportunity.”
“Good,” he said, a satisfied nod. “Consider it yours. The promotion takes effect next Monday. Your new keycard will be programmed accordingly.”
He pushed a thick folder across the desk. “Familiarize yourself with the new management protocols. Sub-level 3 operations are highly sensitive.”
I took the folder, my fingers brushing against the cool surface. My eyes drifted to the small, circular silver access panel on his wall, usually glowing red for restricted access. Now, it would be green for me.
My “innie” self felt a surge of pride, a genuine satisfaction at the recognition. My “outie” self, however, felt a cold dread. The closer I got, the more dangerous it became.
But I had the access now. The path to Sub-level 3 was open.
