With the quarantine lifted, Maya and I were free. But the fight wasn’t over. Evelyn was still at the debate hall, basking in the pre-debate buzz, oblivious to the extent of her unraveling. I knew she’d try to recover, to spin this.

“We need to go, Maya,” I said, my voice urgent. “Now.”

We drove straight to the Harrisburg Convention Center. The air was electric with anticipation. Reporters jostled for position, camera crews adjusted their lenses, and campaign staff moved with frantic energy. The main debate hall was already packed, bathed in the blinding lights of television cameras.

I held Maya’s hand tight as we pushed through the throng, the energy of the crowd a palpable hum. Evelyn was just stepping onto the stage, a confident, practiced smile plastered on her face, ready to deliver her opening remarks. She wore a tailored navy suit, perfectly coiffed hair. The picture of power.

She hadn’t seen us yet.

A blinding flash lit up the entire hall, followed by a thunderclap that vibrated through my bones. A deafening CRACK ripped through the air, directly over the building. The entire auditorium plunged into darkness. The hum of the television lights died. The giant screens showing candidate profiles went black.

A collective gasp, then a wave of startled murmurs, swept through the crowd. Emergency lights, dim and orange, flickered on, casting long, distorted shadows. The massive storm had just struck the main power transformer.

The stage manager, a portly man named Robert, rushed forward, his face pale in the gloom. “We’re on emergency power! All systems down, main grid compromised!”

Atmospheric emergency overrides, built to prevent broadcast interference, had kicked in. The air thickened, charged with static. This wasn’t just a power outage. It felt… preternatural. Like the universe itself was intervening.
