Chapter 8: A: The Confrontation

👉 Previous Decision: You chose to take the keycard from Lily and hand it directly to Officer O’Reilly as he arrives.

Lily, proud of her discovery, held the metallic card aloft. Maya gently took it from her small fingers and pressed it into Officer O’Reilly’s outstretched hand.

“He had this,” she said, her voice shaking with a mix of fear and triumph. “Julian had the engine override keycard in his coat.”

O’Reilly examined the card, his gaze sharpening. He looked at Julian, who was still pretending to read his newspaper, but whose knuckles were white where he gripped the edge.

“Mr. Larsen,” O’Reilly’s voice cut through the train’s roar, calm but authoritative. “Explain why you possess an engineer’s manual override keycard.”

Julian slowly lowered the newspaper, his eyes flicking from O’Reilly to Ethan, then to Maya, then to the compartment door where Nora Albright, a family friend and retired paramedic, had emerged, drawn by the commotion. Nora stood with her arms crossed, her expression serious.

“Officer,” Julian began, his voice smooth, a practiced performance. “There must be some mistake. I’ve never seen that card before in my life.”

Ethan stepped forward. “I saw Marcus, the conductor. He’s dead, O’Reilly. In the luggage car. Maya was telling the truth.”

Nora, her eyes fixed on Julian, added, “And the train’s speed, Julian. It’s increasing. We’re past 90 mph. You said Maya was having an episode, but this train is clearly out of control.”

Julian’s gaze flickered around the group. He was cornered, his usual gaslighting routine failing in the face of multiple witnesses and concrete evidence. The card, still in O’Reilly’s hand, was undeniable.

“This is ridiculous,” Julian said, a strained edge entering his voice. “I simply picked up a lost card from the seat, thinking it was a hotel key. A misunderstanding.”

“A misunderstanding?” Nora scoffed, stepping closer. “With a dead conductor and a runaway train?”
