Chapter 9: Echoes of Truth

Arthur Chen wasted no time. The moment the last chilling word left his lips, he picked up his phone. Mark, still shell-shocked, barely flinched when Arthur spoke into the receiver, his voice calm but firm.

“This is Arthur Chen. I need David Vance in my office, immediately. And prepare a termination notice for Mark Olsen, effective immediately, citing corporate fraud and IP theft. Notify our legal department to initiate civil proceedings.”

Mark finally stirred, his eyes wide with a desperate plea. “Arthur, please. This is a misunderstanding. I can explain.”

Arthur merely raised a hand, cutting him off. “There’s nothing to explain, Mr. Olsen. The evidence is conclusive. Your actions have caused significant damage to Solstice Renewables, not to mention Ms. Olsen.”

A security guard, summoned by a discreet signal from Arthur, arrived at the door. “Mr. Olsen, you’ll be escorted out. You have ten minutes to collect essential personal items from your office, under supervision. Your company devices will be confiscated.”

Mark’s face crumpled. He stood, a shell of his former self, and walked out, his shoulders slumped, the security guard a silent shadow behind him. He didn’t even look at me.

Less than an hour later, David Vance, the CEO, appeared in the conference room. He looked pale and visibly shaken after Arthur summarized the findings.

“Jessica Brandt,” he muttered, shaking his head in disbelief. “I had no idea. We were considering her for a director role.”

Arthur nodded. “We have her on an impromptu video call right now. She’s expecting a project update. Perhaps it’s best if we confront her directly.”

He activated the video conferencing system. Jessica’s face appeared on the large screen, a bright, eager smile on her face. “Arthur, David, is everything alright? Is this about the Helios projections?”

Arthur’s voice was devoid of warmth. “Jessica, we’ve uncovered some alarming information regarding the Helios project and your involvement with Mark Olsen.”

Jessica’s smile vanished. Her eyes darted around, her confidence visibly evaporating. “My involvement? I don’t understand.”

David Vance spoke, his voice grave. “We have recovered text messages, Jessica. Messages between you and Mark Olsen, detailing how you provided him with Sarah’s confidential access codes and internal timelines in exchange for a promised executive position. We also have confirmation of unusual system access from your credentials during critical periods.”

Jessica’s face went from pale to ghostly white. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Then, she slowly broke down, tears streaming down her face. “He… he promised me,” she sobbed, her voice trembling. “He said I deserved more. That Sarah was holding me back.”

The confession was raw, desperate. It confirmed everything.

“Your employment with Solstice Renewables is terminated, effective immediately, Ms. Brandt,” Arthur stated, his voice unwavering. “You will also be facing legal action for corporate espionage and breach of contract.”

The screen flickered, and Jessica’s distraught face disappeared. David Vance let out a long, slow breath. “This is a disaster for our reputation. A complete internal failure.”

“It’s a testament to Ms. Olsen’s resilience and integrity that this came to light,” Arthur countered, giving me a rare, almost imperceptible nod.

David Vance turned to me, his expression contrite. “Sarah, I truly apologize. I misjudged the situation, the evidence Mark presented seemed so ironclad. We will issue a full public statement clearing your name immediately. Helios will be reinstated, and we will do everything in our power to restore your standing and your engineering license.”

I simply nodded, unable to summon any words. The rapid-fire dismantling of Mark’s and Jessica’s lives, the swift corporate response – it was a whirlwind of justice, undeniably. But the victory felt hollow, tinged with a profound weariness. The last few months had taken a toll far beyond professional damage. The emotional scars ran deep, the betrayal a festering wound.

Walking out of Solstice Renewables, I felt a strange mix of vindication and profound exhaustion. The corporate building, once a symbol of my ambition and success, now felt tainted, a monument to betrayal. The sun seemed too bright, the city noise too loud. The pieces had fallen into place, Mark and Jessica’s lies exposed, their careers reduced to ashes. But the weight of it all still pressed down on me, the long road ahead stretching out into an uncertain future. My name would be cleared, my project restored, but the person I had been before Mark’s cruel attack was gone, replaced by someone harder, more wary, but perhaps, also stronger.
