My business partner Maya ordered $4,850 worth of vintage cognac and Wagyu steaks at an exclusive Buckhead restaurant, fully expecting me to settle the syndicate front's tab like I always did.
Shawn, the maître d’, stepped up to the table alongside two uniformed Atlanta police officers who had been waiting patiently in the lobby. Their presence cast long, official shadows over the white tablecloth.
“Ms. DuBose,” Shawn said, his professional composure cracking into visible anxiety. He fidgeted with his tie. “We need to settle this bill immediately. Mr. Holloway has officially presented corporate documentation revoking signing authority on the Apex Logistics line.”
“This is ridiculous!” Maya shouted, her voice shrill with indignation. She stood up, knocking her chair back slightly, and pulled out a glossy black credit card from her designer purse.
“Run my personal card! Run it right now!” she demanded, thrusting the card toward Shawn. “It has no limit! Everyone here knows who I am!”
Shawn took the card, his hand visibly trembling as he swiped it on the handheld terminal. The small screen lit up, and he waited, a nervous tic working at his jaw.
A loud, harsh beep echoed through the quiet dining room. Heads at other tables turned, their conversations instantly dying down. The terminal screen displayed a bright red message: *ACCOUNT FROZEN — FEDERAL ASSET HOLD.*
“Try it again!” Maya demanded, her voice rising into a panic. Her eyes darted around the now-silent room, desperate for an ally. “It’s a system error! It has to be!”
“It’s not an error, Ms. DuBose,” Officer Barksdale said, stepping forward from table 14. He held up a laminated court order. “The Department of Revenue placed an emergency freeze on all personal assets tied to DuBose Enterprises fifteen minutes ago, based on filed evidence of tax evasion and money laundering.”
Maya’s hand flew to her mouth, stifling a gasp. Her face was ashen.
