The alley outside erupted into controlled chaos. Sirens shrieked to a halt, followed by the heavy thud of boots on pavement. Commands were barked, flashlights swept the area, and the air filled with the authoritative presence of law enforcement.

“Federal agents,” Gavin confirmed, peering past me through the window crack. “They’re moving fast.”

I could hear the distinct crunch of gravel and the shouts of men approaching the building. Richard’s perimeter guard, Officer Miller, would be overwhelmed. My window of opportunity was shrinking rapidly.

“The other document,” I told Gavin, my voice strained. “The will. It’s under the floorboard.”

“You need to retrieve it,” he urged. “It legitimizes everything. It’s the proof of the $450 million inheritance. Get it ready.”

I turned, my heart pounding, and rushed back to the floorboard. My fingers scrabbled at the edge, pushing, pulling. The wood groaned, protesting, but I didn’t care.

The floorboard lifted just as heavy knocking began at the main entrance downstairs. “Federal Corporate Crime Division! Open up!” a voice boomed, amplified by a bullhorn.

My hands plunged into the dark cavity, feeling for the cold metal of the iron box. It was there, nestled tightly. I pulled it free, then carefully extracted the thick stack of Grandfather’s holographic will. The fragile papers felt like a lifeline.

Just as I stood up, the door to my room burst open.

Uniformed figures flooded the doorway, their faces grim, their weapons held at the ready. They wore vests emblazoned with “Federal Marshal” and “Corporate Crime Division.” Bright tactical lights swept across my face, temporarily blinding me.

“Hands where I can see them!” a stern voice commanded.

I raised my hands slowly, the holographic will clutched tightly in one of them. “I’m Elena Danforth-Abernathy,” I said, my voice trembling but firm. “I’ve been held here. I have evidence.”

One of the agents, a woman with sharp, intelligent eyes, stepped forward. She saw the document in my hand. “What is that?” she demanded, her gaze immediately locking onto the papers.

“My grandfather’s will,” I stated, extending it towards her. “It details the inheritance of Danforth Global. And this,” I added, glancing at the empty alley where Gavin had been, “the journalist, Gavin Richter, has the letter detailing the forgery.”

Her eyes widened slightly as she carefully took the fragile documents. Her gloved fingers moved with trained precision, turning the pages, scanning the handwritten text and signature. The names Marcus Danforth, Richard Abernathy, Danforth Global were instantly recognizable.

“This appears to be an original holographic will,” she murmured, her voice losing some of its initial aggression, replaced by professional awe. She quickly relayed a message into her comms unit.

Minutes later, I saw Harrison Vance-Ellis being led past my door, his face ashen, hands cuffed behind his back. He stared straight ahead, avoiding eye contact, his whole body slumped in defeat.

“Harrison Vance-Ellis is under arrest for felony document forgery and real-estate fraud,” the agent confirmed, looking at me. “Your cooperation has been vital, Ms. Danforth-Abernathy. You’re safe now.”

The twist was Richard’s immediate downfall: the federal agents had acted decisively, arresting Vance-Ellis on the spot, his corrupt enabler. But Richard himself was not yet in custody, merely swarmed by the consequences of my direct action. The sheer speed of the federal response, triggered by Gavin’s timely publication, was overwhelming.

I was no longer trapped. The silent, crumbling prison was now a crime scene.
