My Mother Tried to Lock Me in a Psychiatric Ward to Steal My Late Husband's Insurance — But Her Scheme Caused an Irreversible Tragedy for My Daughter
My screams tore through the silence of the basement. Moments later, two hospital orderlies, drawn by my desperate cries, found me cradling Lily in my arms. Their faces drained of color at the sight of her blue lips.
They snatched Lily from me, laying her gently on the concrete before beginning chest compressions. Another orderly, having radioed for help, rushed back with a gurney. It felt like an eternity before we reached the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
The PICU erupted into a blur of frantic activity. Dr. Albright was already there, his face grim, directing a team of nurses and doctors around Lily’s small form. A crash cart appeared as if from nowhere.
“Epinephrine! Prepare to shock!” Dr. Albright barked, his voice tense and authoritative.
I stood pressed against the wall, my hands clamped over my mouth, watching in horrified silence as they worked. Twenty-two agonizing minutes crawled by. CPR, oxygen masks, sharp beeps from monitors, the rhythmic *thump* of compressions.
It felt like forever. An eternity stretched between each beat of my own heart.
Then, a faint, wavering line appeared on the cardiac monitor. A shallow, unsteady pulse. Lily’s tiny chest rose with a mechanical *hiss-whoosh* of a ventilator.
Dr. Albright straightened up, sweat beading on his forehead. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a profound sadness that mirrored my own.
He led me to a quiet corner of the room, away from the equipment. “Claire,” he began, his voice soft, almost a whisper. “Her heart rhythm is stable now.”
A fragile sliver of hope, sharp and painful, pierced through me. “She’s… she’s going to be okay?”
He shook his head slowly. “The prolonged lack of oxygen during the cardiac arrest… the hypothermia in the basement…”
His words were a blur of medical terminology. “Severe, widespread brain hypoxia. She’s in a deep coma, Claire.”
My legs gave out. I sank to the floor, hot tears streaming down my face.
“We don’t know the extent of the damage yet,” he continued, his voice heavy. “But neurological recovery… it’s uncertain. Very uncertain.”
The world tilted. My beautiful, vibrant Lily. My reason for fighting. All to escape a mother’s greed. And now… this.
