Chapter 13: The Quiet Shore

The subtle fog of the sedative could not, however, obscure the sudden, jarring reality that descended upon the Oak Brook estate three days later. It started with a distant roar, like an approaching storm, but the sky was clear, save for the hazy Chicago summer heat.

Then, the first shockwave hit, rattling the windows. Outside, a swarm of dark SUVs, bearing no official markings, materialized on the access road. Armed operatives, clad in black, spilled out, moving with ruthless efficiency. They swarmed the estate’s perimeter, their focus on the low-slung building near the main house that I knew housed Arthur’s server room. The biotech firm that had paid Julian $150,000 for my files was here. They weren’t interested in me; they wanted Arthur’s research data.

Instead of calling 911, Arthur, who had been in his private study, barked orders into a secure comms system. Within minutes, his own off-grid private security team, men in dark uniforms I’d never seen, appeared from hidden exits around the estate.

Heavy steel storm shutters, previously camouflaged as decorative panels, slammed down over every window and door with a terrifying clang. The house transformed, in an instant, from a luxurious home into an impenetrable bunker.

“Stay inside, Nora,” Arthur commanded, his voice cold and devoid of his usual practiced charm. “And keep Maya close.”

The external internet connection died. The landline went silent. We were cut off, completely isolated.

Outside, the foggy yard became a battleground. Shouts, the crunch of gravel under heavy boots, and the sickening thud of bodies hitting the ground echoed through the steel shutters. Rifle fire, sharp and terrifying, erupted in bursts, punctuated by the occasional explosion.

Maya clung to me, her small body trembling. We were trapped inside Arthur’s high-tech fortress, caught in a war far beyond our comprehension. The men outside were fighting for secrets and data, and we were just collateral damage.

If you ever touch my wife again, I will make sure you vanish from every medical registry in North America before sunrise.
