State Senator Eleanor Albright's Son Wore a Grotesque Political Gown to Graduation, Sparking a Scandal Her Mother-in-Law Orchestrated to End Her Career
A few days later, acting on Marcus’s veiled suggestion, I found myself driving through the ornate gates of the Harding family estate. My ostensible reason was to collect some of Daniel’s childhood belongings, a task I had deliberately postponed since my husband’s death. The truth was, I was searching.
The sprawling mansion, usually so imposing, felt suffocating that day. Its grand, oppressive hallways, lined with portraits of stern-faced ancestors, seemed to watch me with silent disapproval. Every turn felt like navigating a maze designed to keep secrets hidden. The air was heavy with the scent of old money and unspoken history.
As I ascended the wide, curving staircase towards what used to be Daniel’s bedroom, I saw Marcus Finch exiting a door near the end of the hall. He carried a stack of legal files, his movements appearing harried. He paused, feigning surprise as he saw me.
“Eleanor,” he said, a strained smile on his face. “What a coincidence. I was just finishing up some estate matters for Veronica. She insists on being quite thorough.”
“Just collecting a few things for Daniel,” I replied, trying to sound casual, but my gaze lingered on the door he had just exited. It was a rarely used private office, tucked away behind a tapestry, one I hadn’t even realized Veronica still maintained.
Marcus followed my gaze. “Ah, yes. Veronica’s old study. Hardly ever used these days, save for storing some of her late husband’s, and your husband’s, older papers. Rather dusty, I imagine.”
He ran a hand through his thinning hair. “Funny, your husband used to keep some of his more personal research notes in there, along with one of his father’s old accounting ledgers. He said it helped him ‘connect to the past’ when he was trying to decipher complex family finances.”
The words hung in the air, a specific, pointed suggestion. “One of his father’s old accounting ledgers.” The way Marcus emphasized “old” and “accounting ledgers” felt deliberate. It wasn’t just a casual remark; it was a breadcrumb, a small, specific detail dropped for me to pick up.
“An old ledger?” I repeated, feigning polite curiosity. “I didn’t realize.”
“Oh, yes,” Marcus continued, lowering his voice slightly. “Leather-bound, I recall. Rather distinctive. He was quite particular about his record-keeping, your husband. Said it was the only way to make sense of… well, of everything.”
He offered another strained smile, then excused himself, citing another urgent meeting. He left me standing in the silent hallway, the weight of his words pressing in. His conscience was indeed stirred, guiding me covertly, risking his own career to lead me to the truth.
The quiet, opulent surroundings of the estate, usually a symbol of comfort and security, now felt like a gilded cage, holding decades of secrets. My heart pounded with a mix of dread and anticipation. The old ledger, mentioned so casually, now seemed like a beacon in the darkness.
