After leaving my mother’s house, I drove straight to Aisha’s apartment, my hands still trembling on the steering wheel. The cold indifference in Delores’s eyes, her chilling dismissal of Elijah’s trauma as “weakness,” replayed in my mind like a broken record. Her words, blaming me for “losing” him, were a fresh, agonizing wound.

Aisha opened the door, her face immediately registering my distress. She didn’t need me to say anything. She simply pulled me into a tight hug, her warmth a stark contrast to the icy conversation I’d just endured. I clung to her, the dam of my composure finally breaking. Tears streamed down my face, hot and stinging.

“She called him weak, Aisha,” I choked out between sobs, my voice muffled against her shoulder.

“She blamed me for losing him. She has no empathy, none at all.”

Aisha held me until the worst of the sobs subsided, then gently guided me to her sofa. She brewed a strong cup of chamomile tea, its comforting aroma doing little to calm the storm raging inside me. My mother’s casual cruelty had cut deeper than any legal threat.

“She sees him as a liability, Simone,” Aisha said, her voice soft but firm.

“Not a human being. Not your husband.”

I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, feeling utterly depleted.

“She said she was trying to ‘protect’ me, by getting rid of Elijah, by taking the house. Like I’m some helpless child who can’t make her own decisions.”

“That’s because she wants control,” Aisha countered, her gaze direct.

“She always has. Elijah, and your love for him, threatened that control. Your independence threatened it. And now she’s lashing out.”

She handed me the warm mug, making sure my fingers were wrapped securely around it.

“Don’t let her words diminish Elijah’s sacrifice, or your love for him,” Aisha insisted, her eyes firm.

“His trauma is real. Your love is real. Don’t let her poison that.”

Her words were a much-needed anchor, pulling me back from the brink of despair. Aisha was right. Delores’s words were meant to inflict pain, to sow doubt, to make me question everything. But the core truth remained: Elijah loved me, and I loved him, and his condition was a result of his service, not a flaw.

“What do I do, Aisha?” I asked, my voice raw.

“How do I fight someone who thinks this way? Someone who lacks any moral compass?”

Aisha took a deep breath.

“You fight her with facts, Simone. You fight her with truth. And you focus on protecting Elijah, and your home.”

She pulled a notepad and pen from her bag, her usual pragmatic approach taking over.

“We have the emails. We have Reggie’s testimony about her manipulating Elijah at the hospital. We have the forged bill of sale for the Mustang. That’s a lot of leverage.”

I looked at the blank page, a flicker of resolve rekindling in my chest. Aisha was right. The emotional blows were crippling, but the evidence was concrete. It was undeniable. My mother could deny empathy, but she couldn’t deny those documents.

“First,” Aisha said, her pen poised over the paper.

“We need to get serious legal counsel. Not just anyone, but someone who understands family law and property disputes, and who isn’t afraid to go up against a powerful, manipulative figure like your mother.”

I nodded, feeling a surge of renewed purpose. Reggie had mentioned a lawyer he knew, a sharp woman who had handled some of his own dealings with Delores after their divorce. She would be a good starting point.

“And Elijah,” I added, my voice softening.

“He needs to know he’s not alone. He needs to know he’s loved, despite everything.”

“Absolutely,” Aisha agreed, writing something down.

“And you need to prepare the house for his return. Make sure it’s a safe, calm space for his recovery. No sudden changes, nothing that will trigger his PTSD.”

We started to develop a counter-strategy, item by item. Contacting a lawyer. Securing Elijah’s medical records and ongoing support. Gathering all the physical evidence: the Mustang bill of sale, Marcus’s emails, Reggie’s folder. Each step felt like a small victory, a reclaiming of agency.

“We need to be ready,” I told Aisha, a steely determination settling over me.

“Ready for his return, and ready to expose them.”

Aisha looked at me, a proud smile on her face.

“That’s the Simone I know,” she said.

“Don’t let her poisonous words define you, or your love. Their actions are about *them*, not you. Focus on what truly matters: Elijah, and your future together.”

Her counsel was invaluable. She reminded me that while the pain of my mother’s betrayal was immense, it did not diminish the reality of Elijah’s love, nor my commitment to him. The emotional wound remained, deep and throbbing, but it no longer paralyzed me. Instead, it fueled a quiet, burning resolve.

I thought about Elijah’s quiet strength, how he had resisted Delores even in his vulnerable state. He had fought for our marriage, even when she tried to break him. That love, that resilience, was what I needed to hold onto. It was stronger than any of Delores’s manipulations, more powerful than Marcus’s greed.

The tears had dried. A cold, clear focus replaced them. My mother had pushed me too far. She had tried to dismantle my life, to break my spirit, to make me question the very foundation of my marriage. But in doing so, she had unwittingly ignited a fire within me. I was no longer seeking her approval. I was seeking justice, for Elijah, and for myself. The fight was about to become very public, and very real.
