The sounds of the underworld’s justice echoed through the mansion, a chilling symphony of retribution. I found Arthur huddled in the closet, Leo pressed against his side, his small body still trembling, but his eyes now open and fixed on me.

“We have to go,” I said, my voice urgent, holding out the map. “Now. Eleanor’s dealing with it.”

Arthur’s gaze darted to the pistol in my hand, then to the map. His lips thinned. “The cellar. I remember the plans for it. Old rum-running tunnels.”

He scooped Leo into his arms with surprising tenderness. The boy whimpered, but didn’t resist. We slipped out of the closet, the heavy door clicking shut behind us, a final barrier against the escalating chaos.

Down the back stairs we went, the screams and gunshots growing louder, then receding as we reached the ground floor. We skirted the edge of the kitchen, chefs and servants huddled in terrified groups, their faces pale. No one noticed us.

Arthur pushed open a heavy pantry door, revealing a narrow, musty stairwell descending into darkness. The air grew damp and cool, smelling of earth and old wine.

“This way,” he whispered, his flashlight beam cutting a path through the gloom.

We descended into the old Kincaid cellars. It was a labyrinth of stone walls and earthen floors, lined with dusty wine racks and forgotten crates. The sounds of the violence above became faint, distant thumps, swallowed by the thick stone.

Arthur navigated with a quiet efficiency, comparing the crude map to the turns in the tunnel. He paused at a section of wall, tapping it. “False back. Leads to the service tunnel.”

With a grunt, he pushed a loose stone, revealing a narrow opening. We squeezed through, one by one, into an even darker, narrower passage. It smelled like damp earth and ancient secrets.

Leo coughed, a dry, rattling sound. I pressed a hand to his forehead. Still feverish. But at least he was out of the house, out of immediate danger.

As we walked, the muffled sounds of the gala faded completely. We heard nothing but our own ragged breathing, the soft shuffle of our feet, and the rhythmic drip of water somewhere in the darkness.

Moretti’s reign was ending. Not with a whimper, but with the brutal, efficient violence of his own making. The syndicate had handled its own. Eleanor had orchestrated it all, becoming a pariah to save us.

The thought settled like a cold, hard stone in my chest. The sister I had despised, the woman I had sought to destroy, had been my silent protector.

After what felt like an eternity, Arthur stopped. “Ahead,” he whispered. “The exit. It comes out by the old boathouse, on the creek.”

A faint sliver of moonlight filtered through a grating ahead. The fresh, cool air of the Philadelphia night flowed in, a blessed relief after the stale confines of the tunnel. We had escaped.
