Julian stood by the espresso machine, utterly deflated. The divorce papers and injunction seemed to weigh him down, physically. The other partners avoided his gaze, casting furtive glances at each other, then at me. The silence was thick with unspoken questions.

Just then, the breakroom door opened again. This time, it wasn’t a colleague. Two men in dark suits, their faces impassive, entered. They were accompanied by Oakhaven’s head of security, a burly man named Frank, whose usual jovial demeanor was now grim.

My heart gave a little lurch. This was faster than I expected. Robert Sterling worked quickly.

“Mr. Julian Daugherty?” one of the men in suits asked, his voice calm, yet carrying an undeniable authority. He held up an identification badge. “Financial Regulatory Authority. We’re here to escort you from the premises.”

Julian’s eyes darted wildly. “Escort me? What are you talking about?”

Frank stepped forward, his expression regretful. “Julian, these gentlemen need you to come with them. Your access to the trading floor and all Oakhaven systems has been suspended immediately.”

Julian’s mouth fell open. “Suspended? But… Eleanor… she’ll fix this. She always fixes this.” He looked around at the stunned faces of his colleagues, begging for someone to intervene. No one moved.

“Your employment with Oakhaven Financial is under review, pending a full internal and regulatory investigation,” Frank added, his voice low. “For now, you are to collect no personal belongings from your office. You will be escorted out directly.”

The color drained from Julian’s face for the third time that morning. He looked down at the papers still clutched in his hand, then back at the regulators. The implication was clear: he was leaving Oakhaven, not just for the day, but perhaps permanently, and without even the dignity of retrieving his own items.

“But my laptop,” he stammered, “my files…”

The regulatory agent cut him off. “All company property will be secured. Any personal effects will be mailed to your residence after inventory.”

Julian’s shoulders slumped. He looked defeated, utterly diminished. The man who had been laughing moments before, boasting of exceptional leadership, was gone.

“Come with us, Mr. Daugherty,” the second agent said, stepping closer.

Julian took one last, desperate look at the silent, watching faces in the breakroom. Then, he turned and walked with the agents, his head bowed. Frank, Oakhaven’s head of security, walked a respectful step behind them, closing the door quietly as they exited.

The executive breakroom was left with just the remaining partners and me. The hum of the coffee machine seemed deafening now. The air crackled with a mix of shock, indignation, and a dawning understanding of the scandal that had just erupted.

I poured out my now-cold coffee. The initial bitterness lingered, but it was now laced with a strange sense of clarity. Julian was gone. Eleanor had fled. The immediate threat to my inheritance, and my integrity, had been neutralized.

But I knew this was far from over. The Daugherty family’s power ran deep within Oakhaven, and within Chicago’s financial circles. There would be consequences, even for me, for daring to expose their secrets. I had won the battle, but the war was just beginning.
