Chapter 16: Three Days Later at the Potomac

The next morning, the air crackled with a cold, damp energy. I stood beside Major Montgomery Drake outside the towering gates of Endicott Ironworks, the industrial heart of Silas’s empire. Behind us, a squad of Union soldiers, rifles at the ready, stood in disciplined formation. The sounds of hammering and churning machinery rumbled from within.

“Major,” I said, my voice cutting through the din, “the federal requisition order is clear. And my family’s original deeds, reinforced by Mr. Albright’s letter, establish my claim.”

Major Drake, his face a mask of grim determination, gave a curt nod. “Under Section 3, Article B of the War Production Act,” he announced, his voice carrying surprising authority, “the War Department is authorized to assume control of any strategic asset deemed vital to national security and under investigation for fraud or treason.”

He gestured to the gates. “Open them.”

The armed guards, accustomed to the General’s absolute rule, hesitated for a moment, their eyes darting between my civilian clothes and the formidable military presence. One of them, a burly man with a thick beard, stepped forward.

“Begging your pardon, ma’am, Major,” he stammered, “but General Endicott gave strict orders. No one is to enter without his direct approval.”

Major Drake stepped forward, his eyes like flint. “These are not mere visitors, guard. This is a military operation. Do you understand the implications of impeding a federal order in wartime?”

The guard visibly swallowed, glancing at the bayonets glinting in the morning light. With a reluctant groan, he unbarred the heavy iron gates.

We marched onto the foundry floor. The noise was immense – the roar of furnaces, the clang of hammers, the hiss of steam. Workers paused, their faces streaked with soot, staring at the sight of me, a woman in a heavy cloak, accompanied by uniformed soldiers.

Silas’s chief overseer, a burly man named Mr. Thompson, rushed forward, his face red with indignation. “What is the meaning of this intrusion? You cannot simply halt production! The General will have your heads!”

I stepped forward, holding up my hand, the parchment of my family’s deeds visible. “Mr. Thompson, I am Eleanor Endicott, and as of this moment, I am assuming control of Endicott Ironworks.”

Major Drake then stepped beside me, his voice booming over the industrial din. “By order of the War Department, and on behalf of the rightful owner, Mrs. Eleanor Endicott, all work is to cease immediately. This facility is under military requisition. A full audit will commence at once.”

He handed a stack of official papers to a stunned Mr. Thompson. “Any resistance will be met with the full force of federal law.”

The soldiers spread out, positioning themselves at strategic points. The immense machinery, a symphony of industry that had once powered Silas’s corruption, slowly ground to a halt. The noise faded, replaced by an eerie, heavy silence.

I looked around the sprawling factory floor, the smell of coal and hot metal filling my lungs. This was it. The first, undeniable blow. Silas Endicott had been locked out of his own empire, its gates now guarded by the very army he had sought to defraud.
