Chapter 18: Five Years Later

National Day dawned bright and clear, a picture-perfect day for a lavish celebration. Evelyn, however, was not at the lake house. She sat in Brenda Patterson’s cozy living room, a cup of herbal tea cooling in her hands, her gaze fixed on the local news channel. Brenda sat beside her, offering silent support, occasionally patting her arm.

“Channel 7, noon segment,” Brenda murmured, pointing to the screen. “That’s probably where Claire arranged her ‘lifestyle piece.'”

Just as Brenda predicted, the news segment shifted. A chipper reporter, mic in hand, stood on the newly renovated deck of the lake house, the sparkling water providing a picturesque backdrop. Evelyn’s stomach tightened as she saw Claire, radiant and impeccably dressed, standing beside the reporter, gesturing expansively.

“And here, at the stunning Donnelly Estate, we see how one local real estate mogul brings family and luxury together this National Day,” the reporter gushed.

Evelyn watched, a grimace on her face. Claire was showing off the property, pointing out the new landscaping, the extended dock, the freshly painted façade. She spoke of her “vision” for the estate, her “dedication to family,” and the “countless hours” she had poured into making it a dream home. The words were a bitter parody of Evelyn’s own initial hopes. Claire even pointed to a newly installed, ostentatious fountain, declaring it “a symbol of abundance and prosperity for generations to come.” Evelyn remembered the quiet stone bird bath she had originally envisioned there, a simple haven for local wildlife. The fountain was a blatant, mocking replacement of her original, humble aesthetic.

“It truly is a magnificent transformation, Claire,” the reporter enthused, turning to Claire. “And so much of your personal touch evident in every corner.”

Claire beamed, soaking in the praise. “Thank you. It’s been a labor of love. My children adore it, and it’s wonderful to have a space where we can truly unwind and connect as a family, away from the hustle and bustle.”

Evelyn scoffed quietly. “Away from the hustle and bustle to invite the local media,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. The hypocrisy was astounding. Claire was clearly using the house, and the idea of “family,” as a backdrop for her own self-promotion. Evelyn remembered Claire once bragging about how she could “stage anything to sell,” even a rundown shack, just by highlighting the “lifestyle.” The lake house was now her most elaborate stage.

Brenda squeezed Evelyn’s hand. “She’s laying it on thick, isn’t she?”

“Thicker than that atrocious icing on her ‘family’ cake,” Evelyn retorted, gesturing to a brief shot of a multi-tiered dessert being wheeled out. It was a small, petty cruelty to note, but it provided a momentary distraction from the deeper pain.

The camera panned across the gathering: smartly dressed guests mingling on the lawn, children playing a carefully supervised game of croquet, a caterer serving champagne. It was all a perfectly orchestrated tableau of upper-crust suburban bliss. Conspicuously absent was Evelyn, the true architect of the dream, now watching from the sidelines.

Suddenly, Evelyn’s phone buzzed. It was Daniel Vance. She picked it up immediately, a jolt of anticipation going through her.

“Evelyn,” Daniel’s voice was low, devoid of emotion, but with an underlying current of intensity. “The closing with Marcus Thorne is officially complete. The deed has been filed with the county. He has full legal possession.”

A shiver ran down Evelyn’s spine. It was done. The final act of her sacrifice, the culmination of her quiet resolve. She looked at the TV screen, at Claire’s beaming face, her oblivious arrogance. The irony was almost unbearable.

“And Marcus Thorne?” Evelyn asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“He’s aware of the National Day gathering,” Daniel confirmed. “He understands the timing.”

He paused, then added, “The countdown begins now, Evelyn.”

Evelyn slowly lowered her phone, her gaze still fixed on Claire’s triumphant smile on the television. The image seemed to glow with a cruel, mocking light. Claire was basking in what she believed was her ultimate victory, utterly unaware that the ground was about to open up beneath her.

Brenda looked at Evelyn, her eyes filled with understanding. “Are you ready?” she asked softly.

Evelyn took a deep breath, the scent of Brenda’s jasmine candle filling the air. She nodded, her jaw set. The sacrifice was real, the pain of losing her dream home still acute. But the knowledge that Claire’s deceit was about to be exposed, publicly and irrevocably, brought a steely resolve. The storm was brewing, and Claire was about to be caught right in the eye of it.
