Chapter 9: The Emergency Council

#content-1

I was driving my haul truck down Route 15 near Greenwich at 2:00 AM when I saw a starving Golden Retriever dragging a taped wooden crate across the dark asphalt.

Chapter 16: Cold Coffee in Greenwich

The phone call came while I was still at the diner, processing the scale of Clara’s betrayal. It was an anonymous tip, a hushed voice warning me.

“Emergency meeting,” the voice said, tinny and urgent. “Montgomery Family Trust. Clara called it. This afternoon. Evelyn’s authority is on the chopping block.”

My heart sank. Clara wasn’t just consolidating her power; she was moving to strike Evelyn out of the game entirely. If Evelyn lost control of the trust, Audra would be completely unprotected.

Hours later, local news channels flashed across every public screen in the diner. My face, mug shot style, plastered next to headlines screaming about corporate fraud and international fugitives.

The press release was scathing. Clara’s name was prominently displayed, accusing “Miguel Santos, also known as Tomas Ortiz,” of embezzling $2.4 million from our shared company accounts and fleeing justice. She had officially branded me an outlaw.

“Unbelievable,” Beatrice muttered, watching the TV with a clenched jaw. “She’s playing dirty.”

“She’s playing for keeps,” I corrected, staring at the screen. The life I’d built, the reputation I’d forged – it was all being systematically dismantled by the woman I married.

My phone buzzed with an onslaught of messages: calls from board members, texts from former clients, all with a similar tone of shocked condemnation. Every door I had opened in Greenwich society was now slamming shut.

“What do we do?” Beatrice asked, her voice tight with suppressed anger. “The banks are locked, the company’s bleeding cash, and now you’re a wanted man. We can’t even get you legal counsel without risking more charges.”

“We can’t,” I confirmed, standing up. My body was stiff, my mind surprisingly clear. The adrenaline had cut through the shock.

I looked out the diner window at the gray, indifferent sky. No one was coming to save me. No police, no lawyers, no allies in high society. They had all abandoned me the moment Evelyn spoke my old name.

This wasn’t a fight I could win in a courtroom or with public opinion. Clara had made sure of that.

“We resolve this,” I said, turning to Beatrice. “But we do it on my terms. And I do it alone.”

The Montgomery Family Trust meeting was set to convene at the main manor. Clara, no doubt, was preparing her final, triumphant move. I knew what I had to do. I had to get inside.
