I was driving my haul truck down Route 15 near Greenwich at 2:00 AM when I saw a starving Golden Retriever dragging a taped wooden crate across the dark asphalt.

Chapter 16: Cold Coffee in Greenwich

The diner on the state line was a greasy spoon, a stark contrast to the polished surfaces of Greenwich. Beatrice sat across from me, sipping lukewarm coffee, her usual blunt pragmatism a welcome anchor in the chaos.

“So, you’re saying Clara set you up from the start?” she asked, her brow furrowed. “Even before you were married?”

“That’s what it looks like,” I said, pushing a plate of untouched hash browns away. “Evelyn knew my past as Tomas Ortiz, but Clara was the one who revealed Audra was alive. This whole thing smells like a long con.”

“How would Evelyn even know about Tomas Ortiz?” Beatrice mused, tapping her spoon against the ceramic mug. “Those records were sealed. You paid a fortune for that.”

That was the lingering question, the one that gnawed at me. My past was supposed to be buried, gone forever.

Beatrice pulled a folder from her worn leather briefcase. “I did some digging, after Clara locked us out. Accessing old Montgomery family accounts isn’t easy, but I found something strange.”

She slid a document across the table. It was a bank transfer record. A significant sum, originating from one of Clara’s personal trust accounts, had gone to an offshore holding company known for handling sensitive, discreet transactions.

“Dated six months before your wedding,” Beatrice stated, pointing at the date. “And it’s a direct payment from Clara’s account to one of Evelyn’s personal, unlisted holding companies. Not the family trust.”

My eyes scanned the amount. “$500,000,” I read aloud, my voice flat.

Beatrice nodded. “It’s listed as a ‘consulting fee.’ But the timing… Six months before your wedding. And two weeks later, Evelyn’s private investigator, a former state detective, suddenly closed his practice and retired wealthy.”

The pieces slammed together with brutal force. Clara hadn’t just “known” about Tomas Ortiz. She had bought the secret. She had weaponized my deepest fear, my most guarded secret, and sold it to Evelyn.

“She sold my past to Evelyn,” I whispered, the words tasting like ash. “Before we were even married.”

Beatrice’s expression was grim. “Looks like it was her wedding present to herself. Guaranteed leverage.”

My entire marriage. The sweet smiles, the shared dreams, the promises of a future together. All of it a calculated transaction. A half-million-dollar insurance policy for Clara. She had bought my secret, then used Evelyn to publicly expose it, all to keep me distracted while she played her larger game.

I was a mark. A stepping stone. My pride, my life, my identity – all just pawns in her relentless pursuit of the Montgomery trust.
