👉 Previous Choice: You confronted Silas in the underground sanctuary as he drew a ceremonial blade.
Silas’s blade gleamed, poised to strike. I braced myself, my eyes clamped shut, a desperate plea forming on my lips. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and something foul, ancient.
Then, the world above us exploded.
A blinding flash of lightning, brighter than anything I had ever seen, struck directly overhead. The chapel’s iron spire, a centuries-old lightning rod for the faithful, channeled a catastrophic surge of energy. A deafening crack ripped through the very foundations of the sanctuary.
The stone ceiling above us groaned, then shattered. Dust, pebbles, and chunks of ancient masonry rained down. A massive oak beam, dislodged from the chapel’s roof, plummeted through the gaping hole. It descended with terrifying speed, a dark, unstoppable force.
Silas screamed, a sound of pure terror and disbelief. The oak beam slammed into him, pinning him instantly against the rough stone floor beside the altar. A sickening crunch echoed through the chamber. His ceremonial blade clattered harmlessly away, skittering across the floor.
He thrashed, a guttural groan escaping his lips. His limbs were trapped, crushed beneath the immense weight of the timber. His eyes, wide with pain and fury, locked onto mine. He couldn’t move.
The storm raged outside, now accompanied by the roaring sound of collapsing stone. The air was choking with dust and the smell of burnt wood. I stumbled away from the altar, my legs unsteady, my body trembling uncontrollably.
My eyes scanned the chaotic scene. Near the altar, glinting among the rubble, was my ignition key. It must have fallen from my pocket during the confrontation. I bent, my fingers fumbling, and retrieved it.
“You will burn, Evelyn!” Silas shrieked, his voice raw with agony and impotent rage. “The debt will be paid! The darkness will consume you!”
I didn’t answer. I didn’t look back. The collapsing sanctuary echoed with his screams, but I focused only on the light, the faint glow from the entrance. I stumbled through the debris, past the ruined altar, and out into the torrential rain.
The storm whipped around me, washing away the dust and the terror. The chapel behind me continued to crumble, the sounds of its demise swallowed by the thunder. I didn’t stop until I reached my car, the engine still running. I left him there, trapped in the dark, his voice now a muffled, distant wail against the fury of the heavens.
