Four-year-old in cult exposes greedy leader's lies after he starves her and mom, sparking subtle shift that costs everything.
Part 1
⭐ **He preached abundance while we starved — then my four-year-old showed a Senator his true ledger.**
I thought giving my mom a hug before she left for the fields was just a normal morning ritual. Three hours later, I heard Elder Croft declare at assembly that families like ours just needed more “spiritual fortitude” to overcome hunger. My mother silently tied a knot in her empty provision sack.
He boasted about the community’s overflowing spiritual abundance. Yet every night my mom would mark another tiny star in her secret book, one for each time we went to bed with empty stomachs.
My little fingers gripped that worn ledger, the only proof we had. I decided I couldn’t wait for “spiritual fortitude” any longer.
I just hoped the man on the television screen, the one Mom called “Senator,” would understand what a star truly meant.
My mother, Sarah Jensen, was wasting away, her face hollow despite her tireless labor in Elder Silas Croft’s fields. I watched her, my four-year-old stomach aching with hers. He denied us enough food.
One afternoon, I found Mom’s secret book. It was a worn ledger, filled with tiny, hand-drawn stars. Each one marked a night we went to bed hungry.
I gripped the ledger tightly and slipped out of the community gates. I walked until I found the big building with the flag, just like on TV.
“Hello there, little one,” a kind woman at the desk said. “Can I help you?”
“I need to see the Senator,” I told her, holding up the book. “About the stars.”
Soon, I was sitting in a big office, looking at Senator Malcolm Reid. He had a gentle smile.
“What can I do for you, Elara?” he asked, leaning forward.
I placed the ledger on his polished desk, pushing it toward him. “These are hungry stars, Senator,” I whispered. “Elder Croft says we need fortitude, but we just need food.”
He picked up the ledger, his brow furrowing slightly as he looked at the stars. Then he looked at me, a soft sadness in his eyes.
“Elara, this is a very serious accusation,” he said. “But my office cannot intervene in internal religious matters based on a child’s story. We need concrete, verifiable evidence of illegality.”
My heart sank. My “hungry stars” meant nothing to him. My innocent hope shattered.
Part 2
I walked back to the compound, the worn ledger still clutched in my small hand. My feet felt heavy on the dusty path leading to our dwelling.
Days later, Elder Croft ordered a “spiritual audit” of all the dwellings in “The Way.” Brother Thomas, his big enforcer, came into our small room.
He moved quickly, his eyes scanning every corner. Then he saw the ledger tucked under Mom’s straw mat.
His face was hard as he pulled it out. “Spreading dissent will not be tolerated, Sarah,” he said, his voice low and chilling.
Mom’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes wide. Brother Thomas turned and walked out, the only proof of our hunger now clutched in his large fist.
That evening, our bowl was even emptier than before. Our communal food allocation had been halved.
