Part 1
The air in Julian Falk’s dilapidated studio apartment hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. Two eviction notices were taped to his refrigerator, their red letters screaming past due dates. His phone buzzed with another collection agency number, a rhythm he knew too well.
Then, the email came.
“Aethelgard Sanctuary is pleased to offer you the position of Senior Data Auditor.”
The sanctuary, he knew, was an isolated tech-religious commune nestled deep in upstate New York, shrouded in mystery and rumored wealth. Julian had applied on a whim, never expecting a response.
He scrolled down, his heart thudding against his ribs. Salary: $200,000 per year. The figure shimmered on the screen, a mirage of solvency in his desert of debt.
But then, he saw the catch. Buried in the complex legal jargon was the requirement for “daily cognitive recalibration,” a euphemism for memory severance.
Every morning at 8:00 AM, his conscious memory would be suppressed until 4:00 PM. Eight hours of his day, gone. Surgical micro-implants, the contract stated, would ensure complete mental isolation between his “innie” working self and his “outie” personal self.
It was insane. It was terrifying. It was also his only way out.
He signed the contract.
Three days later, Julian Falk stood at the biometric scanner, his hand poised over the glowing pad. The crisp morning air, though cool, did nothing to settle the knot in his stomach. Aethelgard Sanctuary looked pristine, a sprawling complex of minimalist architecture and manicured lawns, all hidden behind a formidable electronic gate.
“Julian Falk, welcome to Day Three,” a saccharine voice chirped from the scanner’s speaker.
He pressed his palm against the pad. A low hum vibrated through the air, and a faint prickling sensation spread across his scalp. The world seemed to swim for a moment, colors blurring at the edges.
Then, nothing.
The next thing he registered was the familiar click of the clock-out terminal. His eyes blinked open, the fluorescent lights of the corridor harsh after what felt like a deep, dreamless sleep. Sunlight streamed through a large window, painting golden streaks across the polished floor. It was 4:01 PM.
Julian felt strangely rested, yet disoriented. The eight hours in between were a complete blank, a void in his consciousness. He ran a hand over his face, feeling the rough stubble that had grown since morning.
A light tug at his pants pocket caught his attention. His hand instinctively dove in, expecting to find his keys or maybe a forgotten receipt. His fingers closed around something small, hard, and strangely irregular.
He pulled it out, bringing it into the light.
It was a fingernail. Short, jagged, and unmistakably human. A dark, dried smear of what looked like blood caked its underside.
His blood.

Caught by the System: Marcus’s ‘Tranquilizer Tea’ Threatens Julian’s Last Memories
Julian’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs as he forced a placid expression, a tiny, folded slip of paper tucked precariously under his tongue. He knew the biometric scanner at the 4:00 PM transition point was more than just a time clock; it was a sensory net. The moment his palm touched the pad, a low, insistent hum vibrated through the console, followed by a soft, almost regretful chime. A red indicator pulsed above his name. Before the dread could fully set in, Marcus Hensley, Julian’s son-in-law and the Sanctuary’s chief administrator, appeared with an unsettlingly calm smile. “Julian, my friend,” Marcus began, his voice a soothing balm, “we detected a slight anomaly in your cardiovascular rhythm during transition. Quite common for new initiates experiencing the full embrace of Aethelgard’s peace. Transitional anxiety, we call it.” He held out a steaming ceramic mug. “A special blend. Calms the spirit, purifies the mind. Drink up, for your well-being.” The aroma was earthy, vaguely sweet, and utterly unnerving.
You are Julian Falk. You’ve been caught attempting to sneak a coded message past the Sanctuary’s scanners, and now Marcus has offered you a tranquilizing booster tea, excusing your elevated heart rate as “transitional anxiety.” What do you do?
A) Accept and gratefully drink the tranquilizing tea, hoping it proves your loyalty. 👉 Read CHAPTER 3
B) Feign acceptance, but discreetly attempt to empty the cup when Marcus isn’t looking. 👉 Read CHAPTER 3
