My Husband Struck Me at a Gala to Protect a Corporate Raider — He Didn't Know I Frozen-Locked $85 Million of My Own Trust Five Minutes Earlier
Part 1
He did it to protect Julian Kincaid, a powerful corporate raider who had unexpectedly entangled himself in our lives to seize my logistics company, and Chloe, Mark’s secret mistress.
Mark thought hitting me would silence me and force me off the board stage.
He had no idea that five minutes before I walked into the hall, the bank had already executed my emergency asset freeze order on every single dollar he believed he controlled.
The sharp, sudden sting flared across my left cheek. It wasn’t the kind of pain that made me reel, but the shock of it, the sheer audacity. My head snapped slightly to the side, then returned to center.
A collective, deafening gasp swept across the Bellevue ballroom. It was a physical thing, like a wind gusting through the opulent space.
Two hundred pairs of eyes, all trained on me, then flicking to Mark, then back again. Their faces mirrored a horrified disbelief.
Crystal glasses, previously clinking softly with champagne, were now frozen in mid-air. The murmuring hum of polite conversation vanished entirely, replaced by an absolute, heavy silence.
Mark stood beside me, his hand still slightly raised, chest puffed out. He was dressed in a bespoke tuxedo, looking every inch the confident executive, despite the violence he’d just inflicted.
A faint red mark bloomed on my skin, a stark contrast to the elegant white of my gown. I could feel the heat radiating from it.
But I did not flinch. I did not move. My gaze remained steady, fixed directly on Mark.
His eyes, usually so calculating, were now clouded with a desperate, almost manic energy. He scanned the crowd, as if searching for affirmation of his dominance.
Just beyond him, Julian Kincaid, the notorious distressed-asset financier, watched the scene unfold with a predatory gleam in his eyes. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk played on his lips.
Beside Julian, Chloe Sinclair, Mark’s analyst and mistress, had a tight, victorious smile. Her eyes glittered with an eagerness to see me humiliated and removed.
The grand ballroom, with its glittering chandeliers and polished marble floors, felt suddenly vast and suffocating. The air crackled with a tension so thick it was almost suffocating.
One of the waiters, poised with a tray of hors d’oeuvres, had frozen mid-step. A solitary canapé slipped from a silver spoon and landed with a soft, absurd splat on the carpet.
No one seemed to notice. All focus was on the stage.
“Look at her!” Mark boomed, his voice resonating through the silent room, amplified by the podium microphone.
“The merger is on the verge of collapsing because of her irrational behavior. She’s not well.”
His words hung in the air, a calculated blow disguised as concern. He was trying to paint me as unstable, to justify his assault and discredit everything I stood for.
He gestured wildly in my direction.
“Apex Logistics needs a steady hand. A clear mind. She’s lost control, everyone can see it.”
A few hesitant whispers started to ripple through the crowd. Some guests shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact. Others seemed to weigh Mark’s words, a flicker of doubt crossing their faces.
I slowly brought my hand up to my cheek, gently touching the warmth there. My fingers confirmed the slight swelling. It was real. This was happening.
But the physical sensation was secondary to the chilling clarity that had settled over me.
Mark watched me, expecting a reaction. Tears, anger, humiliation, anything to confirm his narrative.
He saw none of it.
I took a slow, deliberate breath. The silence of the room was mine to command now.
My voice, when it came, was calm, clear, and steady. It cut through the residual tension like a blade.
“Mark,” I began, my gaze unwavering from his.
He stiffened, surprised by my composure. Julian’s smirk faltered slightly. Chloe’s triumphant smile tightened into a grim line.
“You speak of control,” I continued, making sure every word reached the farthest corners of the room.
“You speak of a ‘steady hand’.”
I paused, letting my words sink in. My eyes drifted from Mark, sweeping across Julian and Chloe, then out to the stunned faces of the investors, the board members, the industry rivals.
“And yet,” I said, my voice dropping slightly, gaining a razor-sharp edge.
“It seems you were a few minutes too late.”
Mark’s brow furrowed. He seemed momentarily confused, his confidence momentarily shaken by my unexpected calm.
“Late for what?” he scoffed, trying to regain his bluster. “Late for your breakdown?”
A humorless smile touched my lips. It didn’t reach my eyes.
“No, Mark,” I replied.
My voice was quiet now, almost a murmur, yet it resonated with an undeniable authority that silenced even the faint whispers of the crowd.
“Too late to stop my bank from executing the emergency asset freeze order.”
His eyes widened fractionally.
“It went live,” I stated, the devastating truth landing with the weight of a physical blow.
“Five minutes before I walked onto this stage.”
Part 2
Mark scoffed, his face a mask of disbelief. He fumbled in his tuxedo pocket, pulling out his phone with a furious jab.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Evelyn,” he sneered, his fingers already flying across the screen. “I control those accounts.”
He pulled up his mobile banking app, a defiant smirk still on his lips.
Then, his eyes fixed on the display. His face went pale.
The screen glowed, a bold, red notification flashing across the top: “ACCOUNT FROZEN.”
A collective ripple of unease spread through the room.
Julian Kincaid, who had been watching with detached amusement, suddenly stiffened. His smirk vanished.
He leaned towards Mark, his voice a low, urgent hiss.
“What have you done, Mark?” Julian demanded, his eyes wide with sudden alarm. “My purchase agreement is backed by those accounts. Fix this. *Now*!”
