Mark’s words had been a thinly veiled threat. He believed that even without server access, Julian could still secure the company through brute force: a proxy vote.

I walked directly towards the VIP lounge, where the emergency board meeting was underway. The muffled hum of conversation grew louder as I approached the door. I pushed it open without knocking.

Inside, Julian Kincaid stood at the head of a mahogany table, a confident smirk playing on his lips. Three key board members, all men who had been part of Apex Logistics for decades, sat around him, their expressions ranging from discomfort to weary resignation. Mark stood beside Julian, a triumphant glint in his eyes. Chloe, Julian’s analyst, sat quietly at the side, her laptop open.

“Ah, Evelyn,” Julian said, his voice dripping with false concern. “Just in time. We were just discussing the urgent need for leadership stability at Apex Logistics.”

He gestured to a stack of documents. “As you know, after careful consideration and with the full backing of your husband’s temporary power of attorney, we’ve secured proxy votes representing a controlling interest in the company.”

He tapped the documents. “Fifty-one percent, to be exact. Enough to force an immediate buyout and usher in new, decisive leadership.” He paused, letting the implication hang in the air. “I believe you know what that means, Evelyn.”

Mark beamed. He thought he had won. He thought Julian’s forged power of attorney, combined with his proxy votes, had sealed my fate.

I walked to the table, my gaze sweeping across the faces of the board members. Their eyes avoided mine.

“You’re mistaken, Julian,” I said, my voice calm, cutting through the tense silence. “Those proxy votes don’t give you a controlling interest.”

Julian’s smirk wavered slightly. “With all due respect, Evelyn, my analysts are quite thorough. We have confirmed the shares are registered and validly tendered.” He gestured to Chloe, who nodded confidently.

“They are registered and valid,” I agreed, a faint smile touching my lips. “But they don’t belong to the shareholders you think they do.”

I pulled out my phone and displayed a single document. It was a digital certificate of incorporation for a private holding company, established five years ago under my maiden name, Evelyn Reed.

“Five years ago,” I explained, “when Apex Logistics went public, I structured my personal holdings. Fifty-one percent of all voting shares in Apex Logistics were transferred into a private, untouchable holding entity. An entity of which I am the sole beneficial owner, and sole voting shareholder.”

Julian’s face went white. Mark’s jaw dropped. The board members exchanged stunned glances.

“Those proxy votes you’ve so painstakingly gathered, Julian?” I continued, my voice gaining strength. “They were for the other 49% of the company. The shares that were publicly traded. The shares that do not, and have never, controlled Apex Logistics.”

Julian snatched Chloe’s laptop and scrolled furiously. His eyes widened as he saw the corporate structure, undeniable in its legal precision. He had bought 51% of the *publicly available* shares, not 51% of the *total* shares. The holding company was a silent, unmoving titan that held the true power.

“You’ve been buying my own shares,” I said, a cold satisfaction spreading through me. “And they’re all coming home.”
