Chapter 10: Cornered at the Gala

#content-1

The Beverly Hills Hotel ballroom glittered, a spectacle of crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and black-tie elegance. The air vibrated with the hum of a string quartet and the murmur of Hollywood’s elite. Sabrina Holloway, radiant in a sapphire gown, held court at a sprawling head table, basking in the applause for her new promotion as chief executive officer of the family production empire.

Outside, in the manicured courtyard, Leo navigated through the valet-parked luxury cars, a worn leather binder clutched protectively under his arm. The original Aegis contract. His heart hammered a nervous rhythm against his ribs. He felt wildly out of place amidst the polished sheen of wealth.

He spotted Helena, standing near a discreet side entrance, her expression a mix of apprehension and grim resolve. Grizz was a silent sentinel beside her, his gaze scanning the surroundings.

As Leo approached, a sudden movement caught his eye. Two burly men in dark suits, indistinguishable from the other private security details swarming the gala, detached themselves from the shadows near a fountain. They moved with a practiced, predatory efficiency.

“Excuse me, sir,” one of them said, stepping directly into Leo’s path, his hand resting on Leo’s arm. His grip was surprisingly firm.

“I need to get to my mother,” Leo said, trying to pull away.

“You’re Leo Holloway, aren’t you?” the second guard asked, stepping to his other side, effectively boxing him in. “Ms. Holloway would like to have a word with you.”

“Sabrina?” Leo asked, a cold dread washing over him. How had she known he would come with the contract?

“We believe you’re carrying some documents that belong to the studio,” the first guard said, his voice flat, his eyes fixed on the binder under Leo’s arm. “We’re going to need you to surrender them.”

A quick glance confirmed it: Sabrina herself was watching from a balcony above the courtyard, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. She had known. She had anticipated. She was moving to intercept the only evidence that could expose her.

“These aren’t studio documents,” Leo asserted, tightening his grip on the binder. “These are private.”

“They certainly don’t look like gala invitations,” the second guard sneered, making a grab for the binder.

Leo instinctively recoiled, stepping back. “Don’t touch me!”

The first guard moved to block his escape, his hulking frame a solid wall. “Let’s not make this difficult, son. Just hand them over.”

From across the courtyard, I watched in growing horror as Sabrina’s security closed in on Leo. My younger son, so brave, so determined, was being cornered, his mission on the verge of collapsing. Grizz tensed beside me, his hand moving subtly inside his jacket.

“We have strict instructions,” the guard insisted, his voice hardening, his fingers now prying at the binder. “Ms. Holloway doesn’t want any ‘unauthorized’ disruptions to her evening.”

Leo struggled, pulling the binder tighter against his chest. He was outnumbered, outmuscled. The glittering lights of the gala seemed to mock his desperation. He could hear the faint strains of the string quartet, playing a cheerful tune, a stark counterpoint to the tense standoff in the courtyard.

Sabrina’s private security was about to seize the single, crucial piece of evidence that could bring down her entire empire. Everything hinged on this moment.
