Dominic Garramone stared at Agent Driscoll, his face contorted into a grotesque mask of fury and disbelief. “You… you can’t prove that!” he spluttered, his voice cracking. “It’s a lie! Bianca!”

Bianca, still cowering beneath the dining table, whimpered louder, refusing to meet his gaze. Her silence was all the confirmation anyone needed.

Two federal marshals stepped forward, their movements swift and decisive. They pulled Dominic to his feet, twisting his arms behind his back. The metal of the handcuffs clicked, loud and final, echoing in the stunned silence of the dining room.

“You have the right to remain silent,” one marshal recited, his voice flat. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Dominic struggled, a desperate, pathetic thrashing against their grip. “This is a setup! You’ll regret this! Moretti will come for all of you!” he yelled, his voice hoarse.

But even as the words left his mouth, a chilling realization dawned on him. Don Moretti wouldn’t come for the feds. Don Moretti would come for *him*. His betrayal, his audacity in stealing from the Don and compromising his family, was a death sentence in their world.

From the hallway, a mobile phone rang, its chime incongruously cheerful. One of Dominic’s enforcers, a hulking man named Tony, who was being escorted out, stopped. He answered, his brow furrowed. His eyes, fixed on Dominic, widened.

Tony listened for a few moments, his face growing paler with each passing second. He then snapped the phone shut with a sickening crack. He walked back to Dominic, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying rage. He stood inches from Dominic, ignoring the federal agents momentarily.

“The Don sends his regards, Dominic,” Tony said, his voice a low, venomous hiss that somehow cut through the commotion. “He says you’re on your own. Effective immediately. There’s no protection for a rat who fouls his own nest.”

He spat at Dominic’s feet.

The unspoken threat, the immediate revocation of syndicate protection, was far more terrifying than the federal handcuffs. Dominic’s face collapsed. He knew what that meant. No lawyers paid by the family. No quiet deals. No protection in prison. He was not just facing federal charges; he was facing the full, brutal wrath of Don Moretti.

Agent Driscoll gave a subtle nod to the marshals. They tightened their grip, pulling Dominic towards the shattered front door. As they led him past the waiting news cameras, Dominic’s head hung low, his once arrogant swagger utterly gone. The image, broadcast live, was one of a broken, humiliated man.

He stumbled on a piece of shattered door frame, almost falling. The marshals kept him upright, propelling him towards the waiting patrol car. The flashing lights painted his descent into ruin in stark, unforgiving colors.

Bianca, abandoned and exposed, was now being questioned by another agent. Her carefully constructed world, built on Dominic’s protection and Moretti’s secret, had crumbled as spectacularly as the brownstone’s front door. Her cries echoed behind Dominic as he was pushed into the back of the federal vehicle.

The federal agents methodically began to secure the brownstone, cataloging evidence, seizing assets. My own kitchen, moments ago the scene of my forced labor, was now a crime scene. But the heavy brass lock on the basement door was finally unbolted.

A young agent with a flashlight descended the steps. “Ms. Kincaid? Are you down here?”

I blinked, my eyes adjusting to the sudden beam of light. I slowly stood, my limbs stiff and cold. “Yes,” I whispered, my voice hoarse. “I’m here.”

The agent helped me up the steps. As I emerged into the chaos of my raided home, the air felt different. It was filled with the acrid scent of broken wood and raw authority, but also, finally, the faint, sweet smell of a new beginning.
