Chapter 12: The Bittersweet Aftermath

The elegant dining room of the brownstone was no longer a place of quiet, luxurious meals. It was a tableau of controlled chaos. Federal agents, their weapons still at the ready, fanned out, securing Dominic, who was now on his knees, his hands on his head, trembling. Bianca huddled under the table, sobbing.

News crews, pushing past the initial security perimeter, jockeyed for position just inside the shattered front door. Their cameras whirred, flashbulbs popped, and microphones bristled like a metallic forest. The entire scene was being broadcast live, a dramatic exposé unfolding in real-time.

Then, Special Agent Marcus Driscoll stepped into the room, his presence immediately commanding. He carried a leather-bound file, its contents about to detonate Dominic Garramone’s world. His gaze swept over the room, settling briefly on Dominic, then on the cameras.

“Dominic Garramone,” Driscoll’s voice was clear and resonant, cutting through the din. “You are under arrest by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division.”

Dominic looked up, his face blotchy with fury and fear. “What is this? This is harassment! You have no right—”

“Silence!” Driscoll snapped, his voice sharp. “You have every right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you.”

He then looked directly into the nearest camera, his expression grim. “For too long, Mr. Garramone has operated a sophisticated criminal enterprise, extorting legitimate businesses and defrauding the American taxpayer of millions of dollars.”

He opened the file, pulling out the first document. “Based on meticulous whistleblower filings and extensive federal investigation, a grand jury has returned a federal indictment against you, Dominic Garramone, on multiple counts including racketeering, money laundering, and tax fraud totaling four point two million dollars.”

Dominic’s eyes bulged. He stared at the floor, his mouth working silently. His mob enforcers, who had been taken by surprise and were now being secured by agents in the foyer, exchanged uneasy glances. They were hearing the numbers, the scope of the betrayal.

Driscoll paused, then pulled out another document. “Furthermore, Mr. Garramone, federal agents have uncovered irrefutable evidence of a deeper conspiracy. This includes a falsified paternity DNA report, confirming that the child carried by Ms. Bianca Lanza, your current associate residing in this property, was fathered not by you, but by Don Salvatore Moretti.”

A collective gasp swept through the room. The cameras zoomed in. Dominic’s head snapped up, his face a mask of utter horror. His eyes darted to Bianca, who whimpered from under the table, her secret cruelly exposed to the world, and more importantly, to Dominic’s superiors.

“This report confirms,” Driscoll continued, his voice unwavering, “that you, Dominic Garramone, have been using this information, and Ms. Lanza’s position, to blackmail Don Moretti, your syndicate boss, while simultaneously embezzling millions from his enterprise and laundering it through offshore accounts.”

A low murmur rippled through the gathered reporters. The full scope of Dominic’s double-cross, exposed in a single, devastating moment, hit like a physical blow. The enforcers in the foyer froze, their faces hardening. The look in their eyes was no longer fear of the feds; it was cold, murderous contempt for their colleague.

Dominic let out a strangled cry, a pathetic sound of a man completely undone. His hands, still on his head, trembled violently. He was ruined, not just by the law, but by the very code he lived by. His protection, his reputation, his life within the syndicate, had just evaporated on live television.
