The confession hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. My father sat slumped in his chair, his head bowed, the weight of his admissions pressing down on him. The man I had revered was gone, replaced by a broken figure drowning in his own deceit.

My own shock slowly gave way to a cold, hard resolve. Eli. My brother, beaten and robbed, a pawn in my father’s desperate scheme. This could not stand.

“The 1898 Charter, Father,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. I tapped the old document on his desk. “Article V, Section 3. Forfeiture of office and property. For subversion of justice, for diminution of communal property, for accepting bribes.”

He looked up, his eyes meeting mine, a flicker of understanding, and then despair, washing over his face. He knew what I was asking.

“It applies to you,” I continued, my voice gaining strength. “You used Caleb and Martha to do your bidding, but the directive came from you. You authorized the timber bribes. You took from the communal fund for personal gain. You are the one who subverted justice.”

He swallowed hard, his gaze dropping to his hands, which were trembling in his lap. “Ruth, my daughter, please. I can make this right. I can confess to the council. I can try to repay the funds. My position… the Covenant needs its Elder.”

“The Covenant needs truth, Father,” I countered, leaning over the desk, my voice sharp. “And it needs an Elder who upholds its laws, not one who manipulates them for personal vice. Eli needs protection, not further abuse at your command.”

I pushed the charter closer to him, pointing to the specific clause. “Sign this. A declaration of your forfeiture, in accordance with the Charter. Your resignation.”

He looked at the document, then back at me. His face was a mixture of pain and disbelief. The Elder, forced to sign his own undoing by his own daughter.

“You would do this?” he whispered.

“I would do anything to protect Eli,” I replied, my voice unwavering. “And to protect the integrity of the Steadfast Covenant, even if it means tearing down the lies you built.”

The seconds stretched into an eternity. He closed his eyes, a single tear tracing a path down his weathered cheek. Then, slowly, he reached for the pen I offered him. His hand shook as he scrawled his signature, Elder Thomas Halloway, beneath the damning words of the ancient clause.

The ink was barely dry when I pulled the document away. It was done. The oppressive leadership, fueled by my father’s secret, was officially dissolved. Martha and Caleb were expelled, their authority gone. My father, too, had forfeited his position, his property, his very right to lead. Eli was safe.

A wave of triumph should have washed over me. A sense of righteous victory. Instead, a profound emptiness settled in my chest. The truth, once a desperate quest, was now a crushing burden. My entire life, my spiritual devotion, my understanding of my home, my family, my God—it had all been built on the toxic lie of my father’s making. The sanctuary I fought to save was, in its essence, completely shattered.

The victory was hollow. The price, my innocence and faith, was shattering.
