Evening prayers in the main hall felt suffocating. The air was thick with the scent of beeswax candles and damp wool from dozens of cloaks. Elder Thomas led the congregation in a droning chant. My father’s voice, so comforting, now felt distant, almost hollow.

I sat near the back, Hannah asleep in my lap, her soft weight a small comfort. My fingers, hidden in the folds of my skirt, traced the outline of the tiny audio receiver. The data stick was already in my possession.

I needed privacy to listen, but finding it was nearly impossible inside the Steadfast Covenant. Every wall had ears. Every moment was observed.

As the prayers stretched on, a thought struck me. My old post in the laundry house, deep in the cellar, was usually deserted during evening services. The rumble of the washing machine, the rush of the water pipes, would offer perfect cover.

I waited until the first hymn, its melody slow and mournful, washed over the hall. Then, feigning a need to settle Hannah, I slipped out a side door.

The cellar was cold and damp, smelling of soap and mildew. The industrial washing machine shuddered and groaned in the corner. Its noise was a gift.

I pulled out my simple earpiece and plugged it into the receiver. My hands shook as I pressed play.

First, I heard Eli’s nervous breathing. Then, Caleb’s voice, sharp and cold.

“Where is it, boy? Your week’s tithe.”

Eli whimpered. “I only made forty dollars this week, Elder Caleb. The Kincaid farm didn’t have as many berries.”

Then came a sickening thud, followed by Eli’s gasp of pain. It wasn’t just words. Caleb was hitting him. My breath hitched.

“Forty dollars?” Caleb snarled. “That’s not enough for the Lord. Fifty is the holy sum. You know the rule, Eli.”

Another thud. Eli’s cry was muffled, broken.

“The extra ten,” Caleb continued, his voice closer to the microphone, “will be paid in kind. From your hide. And the forty is mine.”

The sound of rustling cloth, then coins clinking. Eli’s sobbing continued, small and helpless. It confirmed everything. My brother, barely eight years old, was being beaten and robbed.

Then, another voice. Deeper, rougher.

“Kincaid, you got those timber deeds for Garrick?”

My blood ran cold. It was Martha, Caleb’s mother.

“Yes, Mother,” Caleb replied, his voice shifting, now less brutal, more business-like. “He’s waiting by the west gate. Deputy Garrick wants to know if the county inspectors will be staying clear of the south sector.”

Martha’s voice came back, lower, conspiratorial. “Tell him the south sector is secure. Timber rights for the next three months. No questions asked about the new cabins or the old-growth clearing. No visits from county officials. His family gets the proceeds from the west acreage.”

A new voice, gruff and familiar, broke through the static. “Perfect. Tell Elder Thomas I appreciate his… cooperation. The county has no interest in internal Covenant matters, so long as our arrangement holds.”

It was Deputy Wayne Garrick. The local authority, the man I might have gone to for help. He was on their payroll. Bribed with timber rights from sect land. The same land meant to be protected for the community.

The machine’s rhythmic sloshing suddenly felt too loud, too close. I ripped the earpiece from my ear. My hands trembled, my stomach churning.

Caleb and Martha were not just abusing Eli for personal gain. They were deep in corruption, using the sect’s resources, and they had bought off the very man who was supposed to protect us. The deputy was part of their scheme.

I had evidence of Eli’s beatings, yes. But I also had proof of illicit dealings, of the sect’s sacred land being sold for bribes to a local officer. This was far bigger than Eli’s lost chore money. This was an affront to the Steadfast Covenant itself.
