Caleb’s shadow stretched across my small room, blocking the dim afternoon light from the single window. His eyes, usually sharp and judging, swept over the sparse furnishings. He moved with an unsettling calm.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced a bland expression onto my face. The audio receiver was a small, cold weight pressed against my thigh, hidden under the heavy denim of my work apron.

“Elder Kincaid,” I said, my voice soft, almost deferential. “Forgive me. I was just tidying before supper preparations.”

He paused, a flicker of suspicion in his gaze. He took a slow step deeper into the room. His hand brushed against the stack of worn devotional texts on my bedside table.

“Martha sent me to ensure your quarters are free of… unapproved items,” Caleb said, his voice flat. He looked directly at my apron, the fabric stiff and thick.

A bead of sweat trickled down my temple. He was looking right at it. I could almost feel the outline of the device through the denim.

“Of course,” I replied, forcing a small smile. “Every item in my keeping is for the Lord’s work. You are welcome to inspect.”

I made a show of tidying a loose thread from the apron, my fingers brushing over the hidden receiver. A quick, almost imperceptible adjustment. Caleb’s eyes narrowed, but he said nothing. He had seen me wear this apron for years, for every chore. It was unremarkable.

He moved to my small trunk, opening the lid. Inside, only clothes for myself and Hannah, neatly folded. He ran a hand over the rough cotton.

“And Hannah’s toys?” he asked, without turning. “Are they all properly sanctified?”

“Only what is provided by the Covenant,” I answered, my voice steady. “No trinkets from the outside.”

He stood by the trunk for another long moment. The silence felt heavy, stretched thin between us. I braced myself, expecting him to demand I remove the apron.

Then, with an exasperated sigh, Caleb closed the trunk. He turned back towards the door.

“See that you continue in strict adherence, Ruth,” he warned, his eyes lingering on me. “Any deviation will be noted. For your soul’s sake, and for Hannah’s.”

He stepped out, and the door clicked shut behind him. The sudden quiet left my ears ringing. My knees felt weak. I leaned against the wall, taking a deep, shuddering breath.

I waited five full minutes, counting the ticks of the old clock by my bed. Then, with trembling hands, I reached into the hidden pocket of my apron.

The receiver was still there, cool and unscanned. I pulled it out, a small, black rectangle. I fumbled with the tiny USB port, connecting it to a hidden data stick I kept for Hannah’s lessons.

The files transferred quickly. Caleb had nearly caught me. But now, I had the first proof. The first sound from Eli’s backpack.
