17-Year-Old Cult Devotee Uncovers $40,000 Tithe Extortion and Brutal Abuse Against Her 8-Year-Old Brother, Only to Face Her Ex-Partner and a Devastating Family Secret Behind Closed Doors
The heavy oak doors of the ante-room burst open. Elder Micah Albright stood framed in the doorway, his face a mask of shock and anger. Behind him, other elders peered in, their expressions a mix of confusion and dawning horror. The sounds of Caleb’s recorded abuse of Eli continued to spill from the small speaker in Hannah’s hands, reverberating through the silent council hall.
“Caleb Kincaid, what is this abomination?” Elder Albright demanded, his voice trembling with a rare fury. He stepped fully into the ante-room, his eyes fixed on the speaker, then on Caleb’s pale face.
Caleb stammered, his usual arrogance evaporating. “It’s… it’s a trick, Elder! Ruth is lying! She plants devices!”
I pushed past him, my arm still throbbing, and rushed to Elder Albright. Hannah, sensing the tension, started to cry softly, still clutching the speaker. I gently took it from her and handed it to Elder Albright, along with the data stick.
“This is not a trick, Elder,” I said, my voice shaking but firm. “This is truth. And this.” I presented the ancient leather-bound charter. “This is proof of his and Martha’s crimes against the Covenant.”
Elder Albright took both items, his brow furrowed with disbelief. He looked from the charter to the small audio device, then to my bruised arm.
“Take Hannah to the nursery,” he instructed another elder, his voice gaining a steely edge. “And clear the hall. Everyone, seat yourselves. We will have an accounting.”
The main council hall, usually reserved for formal declarations, was now filled with the entire assembly of believers. They sat in hushed expectation, their faces etched with confusion and unease. Elder Albright took his place at the head of the table, the old charter and the audio device laid before him. My father, Elder Thomas, sat beside him, his expression unreadable, his gaze fixed on nothing in particular.
Elder Albright cleared his throat. “Brothers and Sisters of the Steadfast Covenant. An grave accusation has been brought forth tonight. Elder Caleb Kincaid, and his mother Martha, stand accused of heinous acts against the young Eli Halloway, and against the very tenets of our faith.”
He held up the audio device. “These recordings, gathered by Ruth Halloway, contain evidence of systematic physical abuse and theft of Eli Halloway’s earnings.” He pressed play, and the sounds of Eli’s whimpers, Caleb’s cruel demands, and the clinking of coins filled the hall once more.
A wave of shocked murmurs swept through the assembly. Faces turned towards Caleb, who stood, head bowed, near the back, Martha by his side, her face rigid.
Then, Elder Albright paused the recording. “But the accusations do not end there. These recordings also reveal a deeper corruption.”
He then held up the ancient charter. “This document, the original 1898 Foundation Charter of the Steadfast Covenant, contains a clause long forgotten. Article V, Section 3.”
He began to read, his voice strong and clear, the words echoing through the silent hall: “‘Any officer of the Steadfast Covenant found to be accepting external bribes in exchange for the diminution of communal property, or for the subversion of local justice, shall immediately and irrevocably forfeit all temporal authority, personal holdings within the Covenant, and rights of habitation.'”
He looked up, his gaze sweeping over the assembly. “The recordings confirm that Martha Kincaid and Caleb Kincaid have been accepting illegal timber rights from our sacred lands, bribing County Deputy Garrick to turn a blind eye to Covenant activities, including the construction of unapproved structures.”
He pressed play again. The voices of Martha, Caleb, and Deputy Garrick, discussing timber rights and county inspectors, now rang out for all to hear. The evidence was irrefutable.
A collective gasp, louder this time, filled the hall. Faces turned from Caleb and Martha to my father, Elder Thomas, then back to the accused. The implication of the charter, and the recordings, was clear. Caleb and Martha had not only abused Eli, but they had betrayed the Covenant itself for personal gain and illicit dealings. The foundation of their authority, and their very presence within the compound, had just crumbled into dust.
