Chapter 11: Nine Days Later

Nine days later. The city commuter train rattled down the tracks, a low, persistent groan beneath my feet. Rain slicked the windows, distorting the familiar Chicago skyline into watery smudges.

I gripped the worn strap of my bag, the fabric rough against my palm. The scent of damp wool and stale coffee hung heavy in the air. This was my morning commute now. Not to the quiet, focused hum of the dispatch center, but to a bustling retail store, selling electronics to indifferent customers.

My uniform, a bland navy polo, felt foreign and stiff. My name tag, “Maya – Sales Associate,” seemed like a cruel joke.

I pulled out my phone, a single photo filling the screen. Chloe, tucked into her specialized bed, a soft blanket pulled up to her chin, her eyes closed in peaceful sleep. A fragile, quiet victory, captured in pixels.

A businessman next to me cleared his throat, burying himself deeper into his newspaper. A young student across the aisle tapped rhythms on her phone. Life, mundane and relentless, churned on around me.

I was just another face in the crowd now, one of thousands commuting through the grey, rainy mornings. No headset, no emergency calls, no lives hanging on my words. Just the rhythmic clatter of the train, carrying me toward an ordinary job, a stark contrast to the extraordinary drama of weeks past.

The warmth of Chloe’s smile in the picture was the only thing that cut through the chill.
