Chapter 12: A Table Set for Five

Arthur’s hands trembled as he pushed the bank binder and the property deed across the coffee table towards Emily and Grace. They stared at the documents, then at Arthur, their faces a mixture of shock and disbelief.

He looked at me, his eyes pleading for something I wasn’t sure I had to give.

“The eviction,” he whispered, his voice hoarse from crying. He reached for the 30-day notice and the court summons that had fallen from his grasp earlier.

With deliberate, shaky movements, he tore the eviction notice in half. Then again. And again. The crisp paper ripped with a sound that resonated in the quiet room. He did the same with the court summons, reducing both to a pile of shredded lies.

He stood up, walked to a small wastebasket by his desk, and dropped the torn papers inside. The act was final. Definitive.

He turned back to me, his head bowed low, his shoulders still heaving with silent sobs.

“Darius,” he choked out, his voice thick with remorse. “I am so sorry. For all of it. For using Keisha’s memory against you. For the lies. For the fear.”

He raised his eyes, filled with a raw, undeniable anguish. “When I saw Maya at the basement lock, I panicked. All I could think was that my shame, my terrible choices, would be exposed. I didn’t want you to hate me. I didn’t want the girls to know.”

I stood up, slowly. My mind was reeling. Eighteen years. The anger I had felt, the resentment I had harbored towards this man, it was all suddenly twisted into something far more complicated. He wasn’t just a villain. He was a broken man, consumed by regret.

The truth of it settled in my chest, heavy but also liberating. The eighteen-year search for answers, for the true story of how Emily and Grace came into my life, it was finally over. The mystery was solved.

I walked towards him. He stiffened, bracing for a blow, a shout, anything.

But I didn’t hit him. I didn’t yell. I simply placed my hand on his shoulder. His body tensed under my touch, then slowly, began to relax.

“Arthur,” I said, my voice quiet, “you made a terrible choice that night. And you carried that burden alone for a long time.”

He nodded, tears still streaming down his face.

“But you’re telling the truth now,” I continued. “And that matters. Forgiveness… it’s a difficult road, but it starts with the truth.”

I looked at Emily and Grace. They were watching us, their expressions serious. They had witnessed his breakdown, his confession, his desperate attempt at atonement.

“Come on, Arthur,” I said, gently squeezing his shoulder. “Come sit with your granddaughters.”

He hesitated for a moment, then, with a deep, shuddering breath, he slowly walked back to his armchair. Emily and Grace, with a quiet understanding that transcended their shock, made room for him. The rigid lines on his face began to soften, just slightly.
