Twenty long minutes crawled by. No one moved, no one spoke. The silence in the apartment felt heavy, suffocating. Julian remained slumped, his head still in his hands.
Finally, Elena broke the quiet, her voice clear and precise.
“Julian,” she began, her tone measured, “the bank statements show a $14,000 transfer from Maya’s college fund. Tuition is due in 21 days.”
She gestured to the phone records. “The device management profile shows you disabled her banking notifications three months ago.”
Her gaze landed on the court documents. “Marcus’s debt to Apex Financial Solutions is $14,000, with your mother’s address listed as collateral.”
“This isn’t just a mistake, Julian,” Elena continued, her voice gaining a quiet intensity. “It’s a pattern of systemic distortion, built on lies. And it’s destroying your marriage.”
Just as the words settled, Julian’s phone, which lay on the table beside the documents, vibrated violently. The screen lit up with “Marcus Novak.”
He let it ring, but then it vibrated again. And again.
He slowly lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed, and looked at the insistent buzzing device.
Elena reached out and tapped the “speaker” icon.
Marcus’s voice, loud and aggressive, filled the apartment. “Yo, Julian! Pick up, man! I need that five thousand by midnight, or those guys are coming straight for Mom, you hear me? Five grand, no excuses!”
Julian stared at the ringing phone on the table, Marcus’s voice echoing through the stunned silence. The crucial decision point of his young life had arrived, unannounced and demanding.
