The weight of Master Ba’s confession pressed down on Liem, a crushing blow. His own son, Kevin, had deliberately crafted a spiritual trap, designed to shatter his mind. The betrayal was monumental.
Anh, however, was galvanized. She had Master Ba sign an affidavit detailing everything—the debt, the payment, the spiritual talisman, the instructions from Kevin.
“Liem, we have everything we need,” Anh said, her voice urgent as she paced her tailoring shop. “Master Ba’s testimony, the land-trust contract, the modified car itself. We can file a civil lawsuit immediately. The police will get involved. Kevin will lose everything.”
Liem sat heavily on a worn stool, staring at the affidavit in his hands. His mind reeled. Legal action. Police. It meant public scandal. In the close-knit Little Saigon community, such a betrayal would be devastating. Kevin’s reputation, his career, his entire life would be ruined. He would be an outcast, permanently branded as a dishonorable son.
“He’s still my son, Anh,” Liem said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.
Anh stopped pacing, her hands on her hips. “He tried to destroy you, Liem! To brand you insane and steal Father’s land! Where is your loyalty to yourself? To Father’s wishes?”
Liem closed his eyes, picturing Kevin, ambitious and driven, despite his flaws. He remembered holding him as a baby, teaching him to ride a bicycle. Could he truly condemn him to a life of shame and destitution? Yet, Kevin’s actions were unforgivable, a desecration of family trust and ancestral values.
He had to choose. Preserve the family’s public face and try to deal with Kevin quietly, within the traditions of the council. Or unleash the full force of the law, ensure justice for himself, but destroy his son in the process.
