Dominic continued reading the hand-signed medical and financial codicil aloud, his voice unwavering in the dim light of the vault.
“…transferred on November 12th, 2008, were not lost in failed investments, as I allowed my family to believe. Instead, this sum was allocated to a private medical facility in Zurich, Switzerland.”
He paused, letting the words sink in. Arthur stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat.
Dominic read on, his voice filled with the weight of the revelation. “This transfer was for the sole purpose of funding experimental therapies for my brother, Arthur Pembroke, who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of neurological disease in early 2008. These treatments were deemed his only chance of survival.”
A tremor ran through Arthur’s entire body. His eyes were wide, fixed on Dominic’s lips, as if straining to hear every syllable.
“To spare my brother’s considerable pride, and to allow him the dignity of believing he fought his illness through his own strength, I chose to conceal the true nature of this transaction,” Dominic read, his voice softening slightly. “I allowed the family, and Arthur himself, to believe I had lost my fortune through poor business decisions, thus taking the secret of his life-saving treatment to my grave.”
The silence that followed was absolute, save for the faint, distant wail of emergency sirens, growing closer. My father hadn’t bankrupted the family. He hadn’t embezzled anything. He had sacrificed his entire wealth, his reputation, his very honour, to save his brother’s life. And he had carried that secret, that silent, profound gift, all the way to his death.
Arthur’s face crumpled, the bitterness that had etched itself into his features for fifteen years suddenly dissolving into a horrifying, dawning comprehension.
