Chapter 11: The Vault Door Glides Shut

#content-1

The restoration of oxygen brought a wave of relief, quickly replaced by a surge of adrenaline. Marcus’s attempt to suffocate everyone had failed, thanks to Leo. Now, it was my turn.

I took a deep, shuddering breath of the circulating air. Hicks’s voice, now clear over the intercom, confirmed that Sikes and his men were safe in the lower vault.

“Marcus Brody,” Hicks’s voice boomed through the speakers, directly into the east wing. “Your authorization for lockdown is revoked. Your actions constitute a direct attack on syndicate personnel. Surrender immediately.”

Silence from Marcus’s control station. He wasn’t surrendering. He never would.

I knew the subterranean layout better than anyone. There was a secret service crawlspace, a redundant access point known only to me, designed for maintenance in an emergency. It led directly into the central vault chamber, where Marcus was likely trying to find another way to seal us in.

“Hicks,” I said into the intercom, my voice gaining strength. “Marcus is in the main vault chamber. I know how to get to him. And how to trap him.”

“How?” Hicks asked, his voice laced with urgency.

“An old trick,” I replied. “Follow my lead. Keep your men ready at the main vault door.”

I moved quickly towards the back of the house, towards the utility tunnel access. It was a narrow, hidden passage, dark and cramped, but it was my design.

I found the recessed lever, stiff from disuse, and pulled it. A section of the wall slid open with a soft hiss, revealing the entrance to the crawlspace. I squeezed inside, the dust tickling my nose, the scent of old concrete and metal filling the air.

I moved through the claustrophobic passage, my knees scraping against the rough floor, my hands guiding me through the darkness. I pictured every beam, every conduit, every secret mechanism I had laid down over forty years ago.

Then, I felt the familiar smooth curve of the internal lever. The backup control for the central vault door.

I pushed it.

With a deep, resonant groan, the massive, four-thousand-pound steel pressure door of the main vault chamber began to glide shut. It moved slowly, silently, a testament to its precise engineering.

Marcus, startled by the sound, spun around. He was inside the chamber, frantically trying to reactivate the pneumatic system from a console. His eyes went wide as he saw me, half-emerged from the crawlspace, my hand still on the lever.

The heavy door sealed with a deep, resonant thunk, shaking the very foundations of the house.

Marcus was trapped. Isolated. No guards, no communication, just me.

Twist: Arthur uses his specialized structural knowledge to trigger a mechanical lock-down that traps Marcus inside the vault alone with him.

The central vault chamber, designed for absolute security, was now his prison. And I was inside it with him.
