Chapter 12: Serene Overlook, Unanswered Justice

Two weeks later, the crisp air of early January whipped around us at my cliffside retreat in Rhode Island. The ocean stretched endlessly, a vast, calming expanse of gray-blue. Leo, bundled in a thick coat, chased a flock of gulls across the manicured lawn overlooking the water, his laughter carried on the wind. He was healthy, vibrant, and utterly unaware of the storm that had raged around him.

I watched him, a cup of steaming tea warming my hands. The peace here was a stark contrast to the weeks of chaos, fear, and furious battle. My firm was rebuilding, Montgomery Tech was in receivership, and the public outcry had finally begun to settle into a quiet, simmering anger directed at Richard.

The “Leo Gallagher Resilience Fund” had already garnered national attention and significant donations, promising a future of research and care for vulnerable children. It was a tangible good, born from a terrible evil.

My phone rang. It was Brenda. Her voice, usually sharp and efficient, held a note of weary resignation.

“Eleanor,” she said, “I have an update on Montgomery.”

“What is it?” I asked, bracing myself.

“Federal arrest warrants were issued this morning,” she reported. “Charges of child endangerment, fraud, obstruction of justice, and a host of other corporate malfeasance. The FBI moved quickly.”

A flicker of satisfaction, cold and sharp, went through me. Finally. Justice.

“And?” I prompted, sensing a ‘but’ in her tone.

“He’s gone,” Brenda said. “His private jet, registered offshore, departed from a small airfield in upstate New York at 3 AM. He fled international jurisdiction before the warrants could be served.”

My hand tightened on the phone. “Fled? He escaped?”

“It appears so,” she confirmed, a sigh escaping her. “He had a network, contingency plans for every scenario. We’ve confirmed he’s likely headed to a country with no extradition treaty with the U.S. His criminal trial, his punishment… it’s completely unresolved.”

I stood there, staring at the endless horizon, the sound of Leo’s joyful squeals a counterpoint to the hollow news. Richard Montgomery, stripped of his empire, his name ruined, but still free. He had faced consequences, yes, but not the ultimate justice he deserved.

Leo ran up to me, his cheeks rosy from the cold, holding out a perfect, white feather.

“Grammy, look!” he exclaimed. “A seagull feather!”

I knelt and took the feather from his hand, my eyes still on the distant ocean. The world was rarely as neatly resolved as we wished. Sometimes, even after the battle is won, true justice remains just out of reach, a distant speck on the horizon.
