The executive floor was a hive of activity. Board members bustled into the main conference room, their voices hushed, their expressions serious. Victoria, radiating an aura of calm authority, swept past my office without a glance, heading straight for the meeting she believed would finalize her triumph.

I gave her ten minutes. Enough time for her to settle in, to savor the moment she thought was hers. Then, I made my move.

I walked into the conference room, my presence a quiet interruption. Victoria was mid-sentence, her eyes flashing with irritation at my appearance.

“Victoria,” I said, my voice calm, cutting through her presentation. “I need an urgent, private executive review meeting. One-on-one. In the main corner office.”

Her perfect composure faltered for a second. She clearly hadn’t expected this. The other board members exchanged confused glances.

“Arthur,” she began, attempting to dismiss me. “I’m currently presenting to the board.”

“This is about Leo’s transfer to Montana,” I interjected, keeping my voice low so only she could hear the words clearly. “And your conservatorship petition. It needs to be resolved before the board makes any final decisions.”

Her eyes narrowed, a flicker of suspicion. But then, a triumphant smile touched her lips. She misread my words entirely. She assumed I was coming to her, desperate to negotiate. She believed I was offering to sign over my chairman seat in exchange for canceling Leo’s transfer, trying to save face.

“Very well,” she said, addressing the board, her voice sweet and condescending. “Chairman Ellison has some personal matters to discuss regarding Leo. We’ll resume in… thirty minutes.”

She dismissed them with a wave of her hand, then rose and walked past me, a faint scent of expensive perfume trailing behind her. She headed straight for the main corner office—my office—the very symbol of the power she coveted.

I followed her, the plain leather portfolio tucked securely under my arm. As she swept inside, I lingered for a moment, watching her settle into the executive chair behind my mahogany desk, an almost proprietorial air about her.

Then, I entered.

The heavy oak door swung shut behind me with a soft thud. The sound echoed in the sudden silence of the room, sealing us off from the world outside.

My hand reached for the lock. With a quiet click, the tumblers engaged.

Victoria glanced up, a faint frown on her face. Her smile vanished. She didn’t like being confined.

“Arthur, what is the meaning of this?” she demanded, a hint of steel in her voice.

I simply met her gaze, the plain leather portfolio still clutched in my hand. The trap was sealed.
