He has fired seven nurses this week, and if your child makes a single sound, you will both be thrown into the snow, Chief Guard Mikhail warned me at the heavy iron gates of the Volkov estate.
Just as Lily’s touch seemed to stabilize Damian amidst the blue spectral fire, a distant, high-pitched wail reached my ears. Sirens. Not the soft, familiar wail of local marshals, but the urgent, determined sound of State Troopers.
My breath hitched. They were here.
Moments later, the long driveway, usually so pristine and quiet, was illuminated by flashing blue and red lights. Four State Trooper vehicles pulled up to the heavy iron gates.
Mikhail, still visibly shaken but having regained some composure, stood at the gates with a handful of remaining guards. He looked conflicted, his handgun still in its holster.
Dr. Silas Montgomery, his wild white hair illuminated by the flashing lights, was the first to emerge from one of the vehicles. Beside him stood Detective Sarah Jenkins, her face grim and unyielding.
“Chief Rostova,” Jenkins’ voice cut through the cold air, “we have an urgent warrant for the property. Attempted murder, illegal substance administration, and potential kidnapping. Stand down and open these gates.”
Mikhail hesitated, glancing nervously back at the manor, then at Drake’s velvet-clad figure, who had now appeared at a high window, his face a mask of fury.
“My orders are from Mr. Drake,” Mikhail stammered. “He claims Nurse Halloway is unstable—”
“We have Dr. Finch’s sworn admission, Chief,” Jenkins interrupted, holding up a file. “He confessed that Julian Drake forced him to withhold critical anti-toxins from Mr. Volkov. That’s a felony.”
Mikhail’s eyes widened. He knew Finch was a weak link, but a sworn confession was impossible to ignore. His loyalty to Drake fractured completely.
“Furthermore,” Silas Montgomery interjected, stepping forward, “we have chemical analysis of the aconite and spectral ash vials Nurse Halloway smuggled out. A clear match for the poison being administered to Mr. Volkov. And,” he added, his voice chillingly calm, “Julian Drake’s fingerprints are on those vials.”
My heart leaped. Drake’s fingerprints! That was it. Irrefutable physical evidence.
Jenkins produced another document. “This warrant is for Julian Drake’s immediate arrest, a full search of the premises, and the safe extraction of Nurse Halloway and her daughter, Lily.”
Mikhail, his face pale, slowly lowered his head. He gestured to his men. “Open the gates.”
The heavy iron gates swung inward with a groan. State Troopers, armed and resolute, poured onto the grounds. The blue and red lights pulsed on the ancient stones of Volkov Manor, signaling the end of Drake’s reign of terror.
The game was over. Or so I thought.
