Chapter 18: One Year Later: A Brief Connection – newsusdaily.com

The State Troopers were closing in. I could hear their shouts, the thud of their boots on the marble floors, growing louder outside the library doors.

Drake, however, seemed oblivious, consumed by his dark task. He lit the black candles with a single, ritualistic flourish. Their flickering light cast grotesque, dancing shadows across the ancient texts lining the walls.

As the first candle flame caught, a horrifying transformation began. Drake’s eyes, previously just desperate, turned solid black. The whites of his eyes vanished, replaced by an inky, abyssal darkness.

And then, I saw it. The dark, faceless entity Lily had drawn, the spectral parasite attached to Drake’s neck, began to manifest visibly in the corners of the room.

Thick, swirling shadows, solid and tangible, oozed from the doorframes. They pulsed with an unnatural cold, pushing outwards.

Outside, I heard the metallic clang of a breaching ram against the reinforced oak doors. A trooper shouted, “On three! One… two…”

But before they could finish, the supernatural shadows surged, physically repelling the officers. A collective gasp, then a frustrated roar, came from the hallway.

The rhythmic thudding of the breaching tool stopped. The shadows solidified further, jamming the mechanical tools, making the library doors impervious.

“Fools,” Drake sneered, his voice now deeper, resonant, almost inhuman. “They cannot enter here. Not while the ritual is active.”

He reached into his velvet coat and produced a small, silver dagger, its blade intricately etched with symbols that mirrored the ones carved into the floor. The dagger shimmered in the candlelight.

“Now, Nurse Halloway,” Drake said, his black eyes fixed on me, “you have a choice. Sign your confession, or watch your child become part of this manor’s history.”

Lily buried her face in my side, her small body trembling. I clutched her tighter, a desperate defiance rising within me.

The air in the library crackled with malevolent energy. The shadows writhed, the black candles burned with an impossible, cold light. Drake began to chant, a guttural, ancient language I didn’t understand, but which filled the room with an oppressive, suffocating weight.

This was no longer just attempted murder or extortion. This was a direct confrontation with true darkness.

He has fired seven nurses this week, and if your child makes a single sound, you will both be thrown into the snow, Chief Guard Mikhail warned me at the heavy iron gates of the Volkov estate.
