Chapter 14: Lines in the Dark

Victor’s pickup truck was violently swerved off Highway 190, tires screeching in protest as a black SUV cut him off, forcing him into a desolate, overgrown industrial junkyard on the outskirts of Killeen. Metal carcasses of forgotten cars lay scattered like bones, glinting dully in the dim light of a flickering street lamp.

Another SUV blocked his rear, its headlights blinding him.

He slammed on the brakes, dust and rust billowing around him. He fumbled for his service sidearm, a standard issue M9 pistol, pulling it from its holster. He stepped out, weapon raised, expecting to see Army CID agents or military police. His face was a mixture of fear and bravado.

“Show yourselves!” he yelled, his voice cracking. “I demand to speak with my commanding officer!”

Four figures emerged from the shadows, not in crisp military uniforms, but in dark, nondescript clothing. Each one held a weapon, glinting in the faint light. They moved with a practiced, predatory calm.

Then, a fifth figure stepped forward. Hector Reyes. He held a stack of papers in his hand—the printed copies of Victor’s betrayal text messages.

Reyes walked slowly, deliberately, toward Victor. His face was a mask of cold fury. He didn’t say a word. He just threw the printouts at Victor’s feet. They fluttered down, stark white against the grimy ground.

Victor’s eyes darted from Reyes to the scattered papers, then to the armed men surrounding him. The military police weren’t coming. No court-martial. No formal arrest.

He saw his own words, his own treacherous plans to pin everything on Reyes’s crew, staring back at him from the printouts.

“It’s a trick!” Victor stammered, desperation clawing at his throat. “A computer-generated hallucination! My stepdaughter… she’s deranged, delusional!”

Reyes didn’t even acknowledge his words. He just shook his head, a gesture of profound disgust.

“You tried to sell us out, Victor,” Reyes said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. “You brought heat down on my operation. You jeopardized my crew.”

He motioned to his men. In a fluid, practiced motion, two of them moved, disarming Victor before he could even register their approach. The M9 pistol was wrested from his hand, its metallic click echoing in the junkyard.

Victor opened his mouth to scream, to plead. But a rough hand clamped over his mouth, another gripped his arm, twisting it behind his back.

He struggled, thrashing, but the syndicate members were strong, efficient. He was shoved, unceremoniously, into the back of an unmarked van. The door slammed shut, cutting off his panicked cries.

The van’s engine roared to life. It peeled away from the junkyard, disappearing into the dark Texas scrubland, leaving behind only the idling pickup truck, the scattered printouts, and the lingering scent of fear and betrayal. Victor Delgado was gone, taken by the very shadows he had tried to exploit.
