Chapter 12: The Next Morning in the Basement Studio

#content-1

The harsh glare of the halogen light in my cramped basement sewing room hummed, a familiar, incessant drone. It was 6:00 AM, and the predawn chill still clung to the air despite the rain having stopped. I sat at my old, worn work table, a mug of lukewarm coffee beside me.

The room smelled of fabric and faint disinfectant. Bolts of new, unworked Gullah-Geechee textiles lay stacked in a corner, waiting for inspiration. This was my sanctuary, the place where ideas were born, where dreams were stitched into being. It was also the unglamorous reality of my everyday life, far removed from the marble lobbies and flashing cameras of last night.

My shoulders ached from the frantic work, my eyes felt gritty from lack of sleep. But there was a different kind of tired in my bones now, a weariness born not of defeat, but of battle.

I reached for my phone, scrolling through the deluge of notifications. Messages from Chloe, congratulatory texts from other designers who’d seen the lobby show, and a dozen missed calls from unknown numbers. The fashion world was buzzing with my name, with the story of the “mystery designer” who had stolen the spotlight.

Then, a new notification popped up, stark and cold against the bright screen. An email from Victoria St. Cyr’s legal firm.

I opened it, my heart sinking even as I expected it. Two attached PDF documents. Formal court summonses. Complaints alleging breach of contract, intellectual property infringement, and defamation. The first volley in Victoria’s promised war.

The corporate fight was here. It hadn’t waited for me to celebrate, to rest, or even to fully comprehend the magnitude of what I had done. It had arrived promptly, efficiently, and relentlessly.

I stared at the summonses, the legalese blurring before my eyes. My mind went back to Victoria’s threats, her promise to bleed me dry. This wasn’t a neat, clean victory. It was a declaration of war.

The halogen light above me buzzed, just like it had at the start, casting long shadows across my small workspace. I had saved my soul, I had stunned the fashion world, but my battle for survival was far from over.
