Framed by Her Ruthless Boss to Euthanize a $45,000,000 Champion Racehorse, Caretaker Maya Uncovers a Hidden Will and Triggers a Deadly Syndicate War for Control of Holbrook Thoroughbred Holdings
A long time later. The air smelled of antiseptic and lukewarm coffee. It was a familiar scent now, comforting in its mundane predictability.
I sat in the small, fluorescent-lit breakroom kitchen of a regional veterinary clinic, my new normal. I’d stepped down from the full-time corporate role at Holbrook, installing a trusted CEO, and now consulted for smaller, ethical equine operations. It was a quieter life, one focused entirely on the horses, not the balance sheets.
I sipped the bland coffee from a chipped mug, scrolling through a local online newspaper on my phone. My thumb idly grazed past headlines about county fair preparations and high school football.
Then, a small article, tucked away near the bottom of the page, snagged my attention. “Unmarked Vehicles Spotted Near Abandoned Holbrook Estate,” the title read.
The article was vague, just a local oddity. Locals reported seeing black SUVs, occasionally, near the overgrown, unkempt perimeter of the property where Victoria’s personal residence had once stood. There were no names, no details, just a casual observation about strange activity.
Victoria Holbrook’s name wasn’t mentioned. The syndicate’s wasn’t either. The article implied nothing criminal, just a peculiar lingering presence.
I put the phone down, the lukewarm coffee mug still warm in my hands. A faint chill, however, ran through me.
The company was safe. The horses were safe. But I wondered, then, if Victoria’s underground creditors would ever come looking for the rest of the company.
