Framed by Her Ruthless Boss to Euthanize a $45,000,000 Champion Racehorse, Caretaker Maya Uncovers a Hidden Will and Triggers a Deadly Syndicate War for Control of Holbrook Thoroughbred Holdings
The weight of the original trust deed felt impossibly heavy in my hands. I re-read the clause, then re-read it again, as if the words might shift and change.
Fifty-one percent. Majority shareholder.
I was the owner. Of everything Victoria had tried to steal, control, and destroy.
The thought made my head spin. I needed to think, to process, somewhere safe and anonymous.
I drove until the dim glow of a flickering neon sign pierced the darkness: “EAT,” it declared in chipped red letters. A 24-hour diner, quiet and out of the way. Perfect.
Inside, the air was thick with the smell of stale coffee and fried food. A lone man sat at the counter, hunched over a plate of untouched pancakes. The waitress, an older woman with tired eyes, just nodded when I asked for a booth in the back.
I ordered coffee, strong and black, and then spread the ancient trust deed and several of Victoria’s more recent, fraudulent corporate ledgers (which I had also grabbed in my frantic escape) across the sticky plastic tabletop.
The man at the counter, Julian Reyes, shifted on his stool. I noticed him watching me, his gaze lingering on the scattered papers.
He had a quiet intensity about him, a stillness that made him blend into the diner’s worn decor. He hadn’t touched his food.
After a few minutes, he picked up his coffee cup and walked slowly toward my booth.
“Excuse me,” he said, his voice soft but clear. “Mind if I ask what those are?” He gestured vaguely at the ledgers.
I stiffened, ready to gather the documents, but he simply pointed to a subtle, almost invisible watermark on one of Victoria’s printed spreadsheets. It was a faint, almost shimmering pattern embedded in the paper itself.
“That’s a syndicate mark,” Julian stated, his eyes meeting mine. They were sharp, intelligent. “A very specific one. I’ve seen it before.”
My blood ran cold. “A syndicate?” I repeated, my voice barely a whisper.
He nodded slowly. “I used to audit for some… less-than-legal enterprises. Those marks mean someone’s operating way outside the official books. And they don’t play by official rules.”
