Framed by Her Ruthless Boss to Euthanize a $45,000,000 Champion Racehorse, Caretaker Maya Uncovers a Hidden Will and Triggers a Deadly Syndicate War for Control of Holbrook Thoroughbred Holdings
Julian slid into the booth opposite me, his coffee untouched. He didn’t ask questions, just waited for me to speak.
“What exactly does that mean?” I finally managed, gesturing to the watermark. “Less-than-legal?”
He leaned forward, lowering his voice. “It means Victoria Holbrook isn’t just dealing with embezzlement or insurance fraud. She’s tied to an off-track criminal gambling syndicate.”
My heart hammered. This was far worse than I imagined.
“These aren’t your typical loans,” Julian continued, tapping a finger on one of Victoria’s ledgers. “She’s pledged the estate’s prime land assets as collateral for personal debts. Big ones.”
He paused, letting that sink in. “They specialize in high-stakes bets, and when their clients lose or default, they don’t go to court. They enforce collection themselves. And they’re incredibly efficient.”
“How much?” I asked, dread creeping up my spine.
Julian’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the ledgers. “Based on these figures, and the implied leverage, she’s leveraged the entire $45,000,000 value of Holbrook Thoroughbred Holdings. Maybe more, to cover her own gambling losses and bad investments.”
He slid the official Holbrook Trust Deed across the table. “This document changes everything. She pledged something she didn’t legally own majority control of. The syndicate will see that as an affront.”
“But if they don’t use the law…” I trailed off, imagining the dark implications.
“Exactly,” Julian said grimly. “They use their own brand of justice. And that’s often far more permanent than anything a judge can hand down.”
He looked at me, a silent question in his gaze. “You have leverage, Maya. Real, undeniable ownership. The syndicate might be ruthless, but they respect clear lines of authority, especially when money is involved.”
“You think they’d listen?” I asked, my voice thin. “To me?”
“They’ll listen to the true owner of the collateral,” Julian affirmed. “They don’t like being played for fools. Victoria just made a very powerful enemy out of them.”
