My Best Friend Burned My Dad's Final Audio Recording in a Bonfire — But My Dog Pulled Out a Hidden Fireproof Box That Uncovered His Family's Wiretap
The auditorium doors burst open. Uniformed police officers streamed into the hall, their heavy boots thudding on the marble floor. A collective hush fell over the shocked crowd. Every eye followed them.
My heart pounded against my ribs, a frantic drum. They were here.
They didn’t move toward the stage. They didn’t even glance at Marcus, who remained at the podium, his face now a mask of practiced concern.
Instead, they walked directly into the VIP row. Toward Leo.
Leo stood frozen, his eyes wide with a dawning horror. He looked at me, a silent plea in his gaze.
Two officers flanked him. “Mr. Leo Ellison?” one of them said, his voice clipped and formal. “You’re under arrest for grand larceny and felony fraud against the city of Oakmont.”
The sound of metal clinking echoed through the hushed hall. Handcuffs.
Maya Lin, still broadcasting, pivoted her camera to capture the scene. The live-stream feed was now showing Leo being cuffed, his shoulders slumping.
Marcus, from the podium, offered me a cold, sympathetic smile. It wasn’t triumph; it was something far more chilling—pity.
“We wish Mr. Ellison a swift and fair legal process,” Marcus announced, his voice resonating through the speakers. He then turned his gaze to me. “And we are all so grateful for Ms. Nora Ellison’s courageous medical recovery, and her strength in overcoming such personal adversity.”
The words felt like a physical blow. He was acknowledging my “recovery,” reinforcing the narrative of my supposed delusion, cementing his victory.
I stood paralyzed in the aisle, my arms hanging limp at my sides. Radar whimpered, nudging my hand. I could only watch as the officers led Leo away, his head bowed.
The auditorium dissolved into a frantic buzz of whispers and camera flashes. Leo, my brother, was being dragged through the crowd, past the stunned faces of students and city officials.
Outside, the pouring rain blurred the windows. I saw the flash of the police cruiser’s lights as they opened the back door.
Then, he was gone. Swallowed by the darkness, by the rain, by Marcus’s perfect, impenetrable trap.
Marcus had walked away. Leo was taken into custody.
