New Commander Humiliated and Arrested by Her Stepparent Sergeant on Arrival — Then Her Vengeance Began
Hours before the command ceremony, my secure phone buzzed with an urgent notification. It was Owen, his text terse and demanding: “Emergency. Now.”
I found him in my temporary office, hunched over his laptop, his face pale and drawn. He looked up, his eyes wide with alarm.
“Rourke,” he gasped, clearly out of breath. “He’s making a move.”
“What is it?” I demanded, my heart racing. We were so close to the ceremony.
Owen tapped a few keys, bringing up an encrypted message on his screen. “I intercepted this. It’s from Rourke, sent to an unknown recipient, likely a sympathizer on the ceremony staff.”
I leaned closer, my gaze fixed on the screen. The message itself was short, encoded, but Owen had already decrypted it.
It contained a photograph. The image showed a sealed envelope, stark white, prominently placed on a small table near the podium where I was to give my address.
The message included precise instructions: “Ensure it’s found post-speech. Stagehand to ‘discover’ it.”
My blood ran cold. A planted document. A fake “smoking gun.”
“He’s planting evidence,” Owen stated, his voice grim. “To discredit you after your speech.”
“A minor procedural violation from a previous posting,” Owen continued, his eyes scanning the decrypted text. “Something easily twisted, something that would ignite a scandal right after you assume command.”
It was a desperate, last-ditch effort, a poison pill designed to turn my moment of triumph into immediate humiliation.
Rourke wasn’t just trying to stop me; he was trying to destroy my entire career the moment it began. The sheer audacity of his plan was shocking.
“He’s trying to make it look like *I’m* corrupt,” I realized, the implications washing over me. “To create doubt, to turn public opinion against me even after my speech.”
“Exactly,” Owen confirmed. “He’s hoping the discovery of this ‘evidence’ will overshadow whatever you say, whatever truth you reveal.”
“He’s trying to undermine your legitimacy before you can even establish it,” Owen explained, his voice tight. “A ‘gotcha’ moment to ensure your command starts in scandal.”
This was a petty, cruel attempt to steal my victory, to ensure my first act as commander was tainted by false accusations.
Rourke was willing to risk everything, even his own exposure, to bring me down with him. His vendetta against me was absolute.
“Who is the recipient?” I asked, my mind already racing, trying to anticipate his network.
Owen shook his head. “Encrypted, untraceable. He’s careful. But clearly someone with access to the stage area.”
“He’s orchestrated it down to the last detail,” Owen continued, pointing to another line in the message. “‘Make sure the press is still present for the discovery.'”
He wanted it to be public, undeniable, and impossible to ignore. He wanted my command to begin with a public investigation into *my* supposed wrongdoing.
“He’s throwing everything he has at us,” Owen said, his voice heavy. “He knows this is his last chance.”
“He thinks he has us cornered,” I replied, a cold resolve hardening my features. “He thinks he’s one step ahead.”
Owen looked at the photo of the sealed envelope, then back at me. “What do we do, Ellie?”
The time for subtlety was over. Rourke’s desperation meant we had to be even more decisive, even more audacious.
This planted evidence, designed to be my downfall, could actually be turned into his. We had to use his own weapon against him.
“He wants a public spectacle?” I stated, my voice low. “We’ll give him one.”
