If you don't shoot that monster by midnight, Arthur, I'll clear out your pension and fire you on the spot, my boss, Richard Callahan, barked across the estate desk.
The air in the Callahan main lodge conference room was thick with anticipation. It was 2:00 PM. The final family board meeting Richard had called was about to begin. The fate of my pension, Martha’s home, and the entire estate hung in the balance.
Richard sat at the head of the polished oak table, a triumphant smirk playing on his lips. Julian and Brenda were seated on either side of him, their expressions grim but resolute. They were ready to ratify Richard’s fraudulent insurance claim, sign my termination papers, and authorize the cottage demolition. Caleb Myers stood by the door, a silent, imposing guard.
Richard shuffled some papers, then looked up, his eyes scanning the empty seats. Chloe was still absent. He frowned slightly.
He was about to begin when the large oak doors creaked open.
Every head in the room swiveled.
I stood in the doorway, unannounced, my presence a stark challenge to Richard’s authority. I was wearing my usual worn work clothes, a stark contrast to the crisp suits and dresses around the table.
Richard’s triumphant expression dissolved into a furious scowl. “Arthur! What are you doing here?” he roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “I told you to stay off this property!”
He pounded his fist on the table. “Caleb! Get him out of here! Now!”
Caleb Myers, ever the loyal enforcer, pushed off the wall and began to advance towards me, his eyes cold and unwavering. He was halfway across the room.
My heart hammered, but I stood my ground. This was it. The moment of truth.
Just as Caleb reached within a few feet of me, a sharp, clear voice cut through the tension.
“Stop, Caleb.”
It was Chloe. She had entered silently through a side door and was now standing at the head of the table, directly opposite her father. She held a thick red binder in her hand, its stark color a vivid contrast to her dark suit.
Richard looked at his daughter, then at me, his face a mask of confusion and anger. Caleb hesitated, looking between Chloe and Richard, unsure whose orders to follow.
Chloe didn’t look at her father. She looked at me, a silent acknowledgement of the fight ahead. She was ready.
Richard stood up, his face reddening. “Chloe, what is the meaning of this? This is a private family matter. Arthur is not permitted here!”
Chloe ignored him. She placed the red binder firmly on the table, a sound like a gavel dropping in the silent room. Her gaze swept over Julian and Brenda, lingering on their uneasy faces. The game was up.
