Chapter 16: The Unresolved Horizon

Caleb Myers froze, caught between his employer’s fury and his boss’s daughter. Chloe’s presence had created an unexpected pause. The room held its breath.

Chloe met her father’s enraged glare with a calm, unwavering gaze. She opened the red binder and extracted a stack of papers.

“Father,” she said, her voice clear and strong, cutting through the tense silence. “Before we proceed with any votes, I have some information for the board.”

Richard’s face was purple. “This is not the time, Chloe! We are here to finalize Arthur’s termination and the insurance claim!”

“This information is directly relevant to both of those matters,” Chloe countered, her tone firm. She held up the first document. “These are certified veterinary medical records for a wolfdog named Barnaby Kincaid.”

She looked directly at Julian and Brenda. “Records showing Barnaby was admitted to the rural veterinary clinic with a shattered fibula four days ago. He underwent surgery and was kept under heavy anesthesia, in a locked medical cage, until yesterday morning.”

A ripple of shock went through the room. Julian’s mouth fell open. Brenda’s eyes darted nervously between Richard and Chloe. Caleb, still halfway to Arthur, stopped dead.

“This timeline,” Chloe continued, her voice resonating with authority, “makes it physically impossible for Barnaby to have been anywhere near the equipment yard on the night the timber harvester was sabotaged.”

She paused, letting that sink in. Richard was shaking his head furiously, a vein throbbing in his temple.

“Nonsense! That’s… that’s fabricated!” Richard spluttered.

Chloe held up a second document. “These are emergency room intake logs from the county hospital. Dated three nights prior, at 3:15 AM. Intake Log 402.”

She looked straight at Caleb Myers. “Security chief Caleb Myers was treated for high-pressure industrial hydraulic spray burns across both forearms.”

Caleb flinched visibly. His face went pale. Julian gasped, a small, choked sound. Brenda covered her mouth with her hand.

“These injuries,” Chloe explained, “are identical to what occurs when cutting active tractor lines under pressure.”

The room was silent, save for Richard’s ragged breathing. His entire narrative, his elaborate lie, was collapsing around him.

“And finally,” Chloe said, her voice dropping, but still cutting through the thick air, “this is a wire-transfer statement.”

She slid the paper across the table, her eyes fixed on Richard. “Showing a payment of **$50,000** from the Callahan Estate pension reserve fund… transferred directly to Caleb Myers’ private bank account. Six hours after the sabotage.”

The final piece of the puzzle. The motive. The betrayal. The criminal conspiracy laid bare. Richard sank back into his chair, his face ashen, his empire of lies crumbling before his own daughter’s relentless pursuit of the truth.

If you don't shoot that monster by midnight, Arthur, I'll clear out your pension and fire you on the spot, my boss, Richard Callahan, barked across the estate desk.
