My Boss Tried to Drag Away a Barefoot Orphan Who Unlocked the Town's Sacred Sword — Then His Son Handed Me the Sealed Letter That Ended His Family's 50-Year Reign
The immediate aftermath settled into a quiet, heavy calm. Harlan and Julian were gone, taken to a federal holding facility. But the town’s future, as the Marshal had warned, remained in limbo, tied up in distant courtrooms.
Clara insisted I come to her apothecary. My cough, a constant companion since my prison days, had worsened in the recent cold and stress.
She listened to my chest with her stethoscope, her face growing graver with each breath I took. Toby sat quietly on a nearby stool, watching us, his eyes wide with concern.
“Arthur,” Clara said, her voice soft but firm, “the five years of quarry hard labor, the dust, the cold… it took its toll. And now, the furnace smoke from the recent events, the exposure… it’s critical.”
She looked at me, her eyes filled with a deep, aching sadness. “Your lungs are permanently damaged. Beyond recovery. Another mountain winter, a prolonged court battle… it would likely be too much.”
A cold certainty settled over me. I had suspected it, of course. The chronic ache in my chest, the gasping for air after the slightest exertion. But hearing it from Clara, stated so plainly, was a different kind of blow.
I wouldn’t survive another season in Pine Ridge. Not with the endless legal battles, the inevitable retaliation from Croft’s attorneys who would relentlessly try to discredit me. My presence here, as a convicted ex-con, would only complicate matters, providing ammunition for their appeals.
My fight for Pine Ridge, for Toby, had reached its end.
I looked at Toby, at his innocent face, at the dragon mark on his shoulder. He was Silas Montgomery’s grandson, the true heir. He deserved a stable future, a home free from the constant shadow of legal battles and the vengeful reach of the Crofts.
“I need you to do something for me, Clara,” I said, my voice raspy. “And Elias.”
Clara already knew. Her eyes welled up.
“I will sign legal guardianship of Toby over to you,” I continued, pushing past the pain in my chest. “To both of you. You are his family now. His true protectors.”
Clara shook her head, a tear tracing a path down her cheek. “Arthur, no. This is your home. You’re the one who saved him.”
“And to stay,” I said, “would endanger him. It would keep him tied to the old fight. I’m a target, Clara. Always will be.”
I refused any monetary reward, any formal title from the council that would inevitably be offered. My sacrifice had to be complete. To accept anything would be to give Croft’s lawyers a weapon.
“He needs a fresh start,” I insisted, my gaze unwavering. “A life free of this shadow.”
Clara nodded slowly, tears now streaming freely. Elias, who had been listening from the doorway, stepped in, his face solemn. He understood the gravity of my decision.
“We’ll take care of him, Arthur,” Elias promised, his voice thick with emotion. “I swear it.”
I managed a faint smile, a quiet warmth spreading through my chest despite the cold. My purpose here was fulfilled. I had brought the truth to light, and I had secured Toby’s future.
But it meant leaving Pine Ridge forever. A bittersweet freedom for me, a lasting home for him.
