Instead of pressing the medical records in court, I chose a different path. I contacted Aunt Beatrice and Uncle Thomas directly, through a private mediator. The meeting was arranged discreetly in a quiet private room at a neutral Midtown hotel.
“I am offering to sign over 20% of Eleanor’s real estate dividends to you,” I said, my voice measured. “If you retract your affidavits against me, and publicly state you were coerced by Julian.”
Beatrice’s eyes gleamed with a desperate hope. Her luxury boutiques were bleeding money, and the legal fees Julian promised her were drying up. She fiddled with the expensive watch on her wrist, her need palpable.
“Twenty percent?” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “That would cover my outstanding debts.”
Uncle Thomas, however, hesitated. He shifted in his seat, his gaze darting nervously to the door.
“Julian… he has eyes everywhere,” Thomas mumbled. “He promised me the Logistics Director position. If I cross him, I lose everything. My family needs that promotion.”
Beatrice shot him a sharp look. “We need to secure our own future, Thomas. Julian won’t protect us if his scheme fails.”
Thomas wrung his hands. The promise of an executive position, however hollow, still held him captive. Beatrice, on the other hand, was desperate.
